I don't want to scare you or cause you unnecessary work but that IMO is an exit wound. Unless there was an existing flaw in the casting it would not be damaged like that by a flying object impacting at an oblique angle. That the hole is small inside and uniformly larger on the outside surface says to me the inside of the case took a blow and knocked the chunk out.
I would be very concerned that, for example, you'd lost one camshaft sprocket bolt. It could also be that the camchain picked up something and threw it at the cover. IIWY I wouldn't run the engine until I'd had the cover off to check for missing parts and dropped the sump (if that's possible) to check for bits that shouldn't be there.

Thats what I thought, The hole is in a weird spot to be caused by road debris.

The bullet hole seems like more of a possibility than road debris.

That iks not necessarily an exit wound. Anyway, Drain saw something coming at him. Take the cover off when you get a chance, and make sure there's no junk inside.

+1 - the stuff works great. I've fixed several cam covers on cars with it, and many years of service afterward.

From inside out my :moon: .

It looks like something came in at about a 45 degree angle, cut out a section, and then departed with the shaving.

Whatever it was, it was lucky that it didn't hit anyone. In order to catch on that front radius, it would had to have come in from the side with a lot of force, have a lot of mass, or have been very sharp.
