The service department at my dealership said that it would be 2 weeks till they can get my bike in for her first service. I will be way over the miles by then. I was just thinking of changing my oil and checking the chain myself. Then taking the bike in when they have the open spot(for warranty issues). I think it should be fine if I do that. What do you guys think?

p.s. where do you guys get your filters at?

Yeah, sanscrainte, a lot of us try REAL hard not to return to the dealership! Nothing to the 500 mile service - a LOT of checks to make sure they put the bike together so that the major pieces aren't falling off. Hardest part is picking up the specified oil, but again, a lot of people on this site feel that many other oils are just fine - I'm NOT going to open that can of worms. Filters are real simple - there are equivalents made by everyone - Fram, K&N, Mobil 1 - some have suggested that even the Walmart equivalent is just fine. Good luck on your new toy!

I did the oil change myself. I got the filter from my dealer, a new oil drain washer, as well as the Mobil 4T oil they recommend. You'll need a oil filter wrench to remove and install a new oil filter ($10 from dealer). It's easy. Just look in the manual for any procedural questions or call your dealer. I'm sure they'd be helpful. Just make sure the bikes on level ground when checking the oil level.

i was in the same boat. So i adjusted the throttle cable and did oil change myself.

Mobile 4T racing 15w 50 and a purolator oil filter (used the one that is slightly longer than stock)

everything else looks A-ok, so I'm gonna skip the dealer.
