Well, i'm an idiot. I left the ignition on last night, and the battery was dead this morning. I put a charger on it at 2 amps, and it was charging slowly. I got impatient and turned the charger to the start position, and tried to start it. Something fried. I checked the fuses, and all are fine. Any ideas? Location of the starter relay? Solenoid? Other thoughts? '99 S3 Thanks in advance

uh-oh - hope you didn't fry the voltage regulator.
However double check fuses 2 & 3 (30 amps) - make sure you can test for contunity through them, not just visually - they make look OK but could be open.
Also 5 & 6 (10A & 15A respectively)

What conditions do you have when you turn on ignition - anything at all operational? Lights/ intrument panel warning lights or ??? ?

Most likely fuse #3.

Edit - ignore above fuse #'s - was going by your SN of 2002 - I see your bike is 99, not '02

More likely to be fuse 9 - also check 1, 2 & 7

I did the exact same thing - got impatient and flicked the charger to 12 amps then hit the starter button.

Lights come on strong, and the green Neutral indicator light dims slightly when I press the starter button, but the starter doesn't turn.

The fuses under the seat seem to be fine, and I swapped 2 of them with spare but I don't recall which ones (but if 'main' or 'turn signals' fuse was bad, I'd not have lights/horn, right?

This is a 1996 Trident. Sorry, wrong forum technically but this is my exact problem, w/o the happy ending the original poster had.

Should 'solenoid' be my next place to check? I'm not a mechanic and my closest dealer is far away I don't see any in-line fuses that could be blown.

Update- I put a big screwdriver across both posts of the solenoid and it sparked and kicked-over fine, so the solenoid and the starter appear to do their job.

I presume only kill switch and kickstand/side switch are left? Sound like the next things to check?

Just in the off-chance that someone finds this someday...

I've since discovered that the Starter Relay is prone to go bad after either many years or after pumping too much juice across the battery terminals

The relay for the T3's is ~20 from the Triumph dealer.

+1 on checking the relay as well as fuses whenever there's an electrical issue.

In 10 years with my Speed Triple, the only non-wear items I've ever had to replace due to failure were three relays and the original gear-shift lever.

I now carry spare relays with me. The one that runs my fuel pump has failed twice.
