I tend to get lots of ear infections when I ride with ear plugs. I don't know why, you can chalk it up to me being a pansy but what types of plugs to you guys run and do you have any suggestions of types that don't actually go into the ear canal to help with my finicky ears??

I've been using both the QuietEar and SilentEar from
HearTech. I also sometimes ride with in-ear headphones which do a good job of isolating outside noise. I wash the earplugs with regular antibacterial soap once in a while to be safe. I believe there was a review in WebBikeWorld that I consulted to make my decision. The plugs shipped from Israel pretty quickly. Not sure if they have a US distributor now. They seem to do the trick. Sometimes when I forget to put them in, I really notice the wind noise. My favorite thing is when people ask me something at a light, while I'm sitting on top of a running literbike with straight through mufflers. I point to my helmet over the ear and shake my head but they just don't get that I can't hear them.

I'd recommend the multipack from aerostich, but they all go inside your ear, so I won't. :???:

You might consider consulting an audiologist. I have custom formed plugs that slide in easily, are very comfortable and filter out just the right amount of noise. The audiologist would also be able to offer suggestions for your infection problem.

I like the ear plugs that have flanges, as opposed to the ones that are real soft, that you have to roll around in your fingers. They go in more easily, plus, you don't have to touch the part that goes inside your ear. They are easily washable, but are a little more uncomfortable than the squishy ones. I either use those, or non-custom in-ear monitors. However, customs are the best. I have some custom in-ear monitors, but can't get my helmet on with them in my ears.

I must have some funky ear canals 'cause most ear plugs don't work well for me. However this store sells sampler kits so you can try a variety of styles. I finally found some that work great for me.
