I was just wondering if anyone in the US has seen or gotten an '07 S3 with the metal tank...and if so, is the VIN later than 305060 that was suggested?

Thanks!

Hi there,
please somebody tell me what's wrong with the plastic tank? I know its not
magnetic but what else? Plastic wont rust...are they putting metallic tanks
on all new S3:s now? They are cheaper to manifacture - might be a reason.

A steel tank should have more interior volume if they keep the outside shape the same. Plastic tanks have much thicker walls. A steel tank should have better paint. I don't know if either of these are actually true in this case. The tooling for steel tanks actually costs more but the manufacturing cost in volume high goes down. There used to be a DOT rule that all street legal tanks had to be metal. Not sure what the logic was other than plastics 30 years ago where *****.

I am not hating the plastic so much as I am the stingy fuel load. I am looking into getting a slightly larger custom metal tank done by a local fabricator. It ain't gonna be cheap but that might be an option for you, Weasel.

The plastic tanks supposedly scratch easier.
Anybody with experience regarding that?

Because the plastic tank is flexible the clear coat they use on them is soft so it scuffs easily. On the other hand it doesn't dent and the surface buffs out easily. I have nearly 35000 miles on my '02 and buff it out 3 or 4 times a year using Meguire's #7 and a foam pad buffing wheel on a hand polisher. It still looks good.

FYI, I got a Triumph Carbon Fiber tank protecter when I first bought my speedy, and I would give the thing 2 thumbs down.

First off, you have to place it PERFECTLY or it will never fit quite right.

Second, at least here in the Florida heat, it came off constantly, and I didn't want to have to keep re-buying adhesive.

As a result, I picked up a nice black plastic sticky pad, unsure of the brand now. That sucker looks great, has stayed well stuck for a long while now, and was like $15.

Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.
