I went for a ride today with a group and it was a great ride but most of the group when ever we would get into a town they always split traffic. How many of you guys needle through traffic on a normal bases? I have no problem weaving through slow traffic. I just don't see side swiping a car or getting pinched down between two cars just to make it trough town faster. Especially when I just catch up and pass them in the twisties.

Any general source to find the legality of this in other states? I suspect there are few places in the US where it is legal.

Its only legal in Cali.
As far as HOW legal, I've heard its up to the cop.
But if done in a courteous, safe manner, at no more than 15 mph faster than traffic, and no more than 35 mph total, you shouldn't have any problems.
I've done it on a crowded highway off-ramp here in WI, and in a couple of places downtown when traffic was stopped. Not a big deal in certain situations, but it still isn't legal.

I'm not really concerned with the illegal aspect of it. I know I've done plenty of illegal things on a bike. I just don't see ripping through 35mph traffic at 55 like they were just to get to the other end of town. Especially when all it takes is one stupid moment by rider or cage driver and the shows over.

Yeah, the biggest factor to me is that US drivers don't expect it, and might even resent it and do something stupid or malicious. Cycles in Thailand do it all the time, in fact at every stop light, they all swarm to the front of the traffic. Becasue so many do it, and everyone is used to it, it seems safer in that context (though safety and Thai traffic don't usually go together.)

I'm with abruzzi about US drivers not expecting it. Sometimes it seems that drivers really resent the fact that they are stuck in traffic and don't want to see anyone get ahead of them. Traffic brings out the worst in people and drivers in large US cities can be real idiots when they get their road rage on. Split lanes with caution if you're gonna do it.

Me, I usually limit splitting lanes to fully stopped traffic situations. If the cars are moving, or it's a brief slow down, I'll usually hold off and ride it out.

It's not legal in Cali either, they just don't enforce it, and that is well known, so people do it all the time. Even if they make it legal in Georgia, I won't be doing it, it's too risky. If you think it's not too risky, check out this video:

Lane splitting scooter guys goes down and no one stops to help him, they actually dodge his body and bike while he's laying there dying, very pathetic if you ask me.

I've been googling it, and I found this page:

CHP lane Splitting Page

So it looks legal in CA. But i agree, drivers are unpredictable, so I wouldn't do it except maybe in extreme conditions.
