This morning I went for a ride and my neutral light was coming on ok, but when I went out later on, the neutral light is not illuminating at all

Is it easy to replace the light bulb in the intrument cluster on a 1050 S3 (if necessary) or could it be the neutral switch (if so is this easy to replace) :???:

Anyone else experienced this?

TIA

i would start with the bulb...even taking a electrical meter to test for voltage on the wire while the bike is in neutral and the key turned on. most new meters have sharp probes on the leads that can pierce the wire insulation.....measure from the wire to the frame. that should read 12-14 volts.

Using an electrical meter, I checked the voltage from the wire (connecting to the Neutral switch) and earthed it - the voltage measured 12V - thus indicating that the bulb is ok, I'd have thought :???:

I also checked the circuit continuity of the Neutral switch whilst in neutral and when in first. All is as is should be - continuity in neutral, and no continuity in gear.

This would lead me to the bulb - however, in the S3 1050
instrument cluster, is it a bulb, or an LED? (I ask this question before I take it apart)!!

well there should be 2 wires plugged onto the switch....one will always have 12v...the other will have 12v when the switch"makes"...as in when the switch closes...so both wires must read voltage when the bike is in neutral.

Thanks Dano, but there would only seem to be one wire connecting to the nuetral switch (black/white). This ties up with the wiring diagram in the service manual.

As it is an LED and not a bulb, surely it is only an earth connection required to iluminate the LED :???:

I have also removed the instrument panel and "continuity" checked the LED's on the back of the PCB. All but the Neutral LED show continuity, which leads me to believe that the Neutral LED has failed.

However, my logic/knowledge of such components may be a bit spurious... :-D

There is only one wire. There should be 12 volts thorugh the LED to the switch, which makes an earth when it closes.

So you have a broken switch then.

I have 12 volts when wire is earthed, but alsoI've checked the switch in both neutral and first, which returns an earth in neutral, and no connection in first.

This would suggest the switch is ok as well - I'll have the dealer check it outand see what they say, as the warranty is still valid.

Cheers
