So...

Got a bit cocky over the weekend and took my M3 around a 25mph corner at 80mph w/traction control off...the back end came around so fast, couldn't counter, took it over a curb and blew out both front tires...no damage to the car, no one hurt...thank God....

Why use a car example on this page? *****, as I'm breaking in the S3, she's a BEAST. I think many view naked bikes as wimpier than fared racers, but, *****...you can get into A LOT of trouble on an S3...for all newbies, be aware, the Speed Triple is A LOT of motorcycle, more than most would think, even for experienced riders.

Point of my post??

Ride within your limits...actually, ride below your limits...bad stuff can happen so quickly. I'm a 38 year old father of 2 so view this post as a "concerned dad" for all of us riding these incredible machines.

Having stated the above, I cannot wait to get the S3 on a track...that's where you can get your personal hero out of the way...

:hammer:

Wise words. I mostly work w/ends but had the w/end just gone I had some time off and a group of us went out to the mountains. I was unlucky enough to see the aftermath of a bike accident. A sportsbike, which I was unable to recognise due to the mess, had run wide on a bend and hit a car. There was no sign of the rider but some of his mates were stopped, sitting at the side of the road and were visibly distressed. I hope to god he was OK.

25mph on-ramp or 90 degree turn? i got my spec-v set up so i can slide the rear out with ease (fwd car) with no ebaking. im getting 15" wheels and slicks for it this summer for street driving yeah boi :hammer: .

m3s are sick cars and sound mean with a good exhaust.

wise words snotrocket. Hopefully those that need to take heed will take it to heart.

This bike will chew you up and spit you out if you are too disrespectful of it.

Honestly, the S3 is a very controlable bike. There is no sudden unexpected power surge, very smooth, in control seating position, and not too jumpy on the throttle (ok a little). The danger with the S3 is not that it's too much bike, but that the weaker willed people might take more of it than they can handle. The bike has few limits, but the rider needs to know theirs.

Frankly, I can only safely use about 50% of it. (darn that 5000rpm breakin period)

Geof
(Believe me, you don't want to have to recover from an accident. Some people walk away. I didn't.)

I agree totally with Snotrocket - I am 39 and a father of two and feel exactly the same way as you do. Bikes this fast can hurt you real quick (especially for guys like me used to riding 60hp HDs :-D

Funny you say 60hp HD, that is exactly what I'm coming off. Went on a 400 mile ride on Saturday that included sandy corners. I found that I need to relearn throttle control. Most of the time I was clenching my jaw so hard that my teeth hurt the next day. When the back steps out on you the shot of adrenaline is so strong. And part of the reason it happened (repeadedly) was because I was not used to so much power (so yeah, be f'n careful on the bike, at least until you get used to it.)

Anyway, I didn't dump the bike, but the power is there. Be careful.
