What does the 12000 mile service entail, and how much should i expect to pay for it? My 02 Speed 3 is at 12.5k and I am wondering if i should do it myself or have it done. It runs like a top i am inclined to say "screw it" until later in the summer but dont want to hurt it any.

The 12,000 mile service is a big one. It includes the valve check and possible adjustment thereof.

Even if you decide to risk the valves being/remaining in tolerance for the duration of the summer, at least do the oil and filter change now!

There are a couple of threads that post the checklist for the service intervals for several of the Speed Triple models. Probably the most important check is the valve clearance, but other important checks, such as wheel bearing repacking and coolant flush need to be done.

Most of these things can be done by someone who is mechanically inclined.

Checking the valve clearance is pretty easy, I just did it for the first time on my Busa @ 28,000 miles and only two valves were near the tight end of tolerance. Adjusting the valves isn't even that hard if you're not afraid of pulling the cams out. If the thought of doing that scares you, it'd probably best be left to a shop, otherwise anyone with a basic set of tools can do it themselves.

Right this is a big one. All my valves were out and it runs so much better now that they have been set right. Also wheel bearings packed, most poeple forget this one. If you check this service list it's most of them that are done on 12,000.

if you can do some your self like changing coolant brake fluids/pads the easy stuff will cut labour time a bit.

I would add repacking the rear suspension linkage.
Mine needed it.

I paid $470 for mine...everything was in spec.

Always get an estimate up front, it should always be your practice when taking bike in for service.
