I think many Ducati purchases are made purely on emtion...because it's a Ducati. Conversely, I think most people buy a Triumph because they like the particular bike they've selected, not because it's a Triumph. If you take emotion (about the marque) out of the equation and evaluate a S4R vs S3 objectively, the S3 wins hands down. In fact, two different dealers in town that handle both Ducati and Triumph recommended the S3 over any Monster. I think that says something as well.

I was in the same boat just a few months ago. I have ridden both. There is NOTHING about the Duc that would make me spend that much more money for it and then pay 3 to 5 times more for up-keep.

Get the Ducati. The xtra money is worth it considering the better components.Besides, nothing sounds better than a Ducati. The Speed Triple is a horrible bike.

I haven't ridden one but the S4R is definately a bike that I'd like to own. Would I rather have one than my Speed Triple, NOPE. Love the exhaust note of the sR4 and Ducati is very "fashionable"and they make lots of cool ducati stuff (shirts, jackets...)

The Triumph wins hands down in comparisons of performance and value. It's also a bit more unique.
It all comes down to what makes your boat float.

Good one, jlzmeehan. We should get Cheap to do a Speed Triple is horrible sticky. That would be hilarious. Definitely would show the sick sense of humor we have here.

It's funny, I used to think of Ducati as one of the most exotic of brands, until I realized that they way outsell Triumph. However, I hope Triumph keeps gaining is sales, and broadens their line even more. We should want to share these great bikes with everyone!

When I was buying this bike, the first bike I test rode was a Duc S4R (not the RS) so all my comparisons were to the Ducati.

Based on costs, performance, looks etc I chose:
1 S3
2 SV1000
3 S4R

but then again, if I got it I probably wouldn't be posting here

I think the triumph just has character that none of the others had - kind of the others were designed "as-is" but the S3 is better because even stock it seems modified (and has the appropriate performace to match, out of the box)

I absolutely love my Speed Triple.

But then, I got a gig leading demo-rides for a local Ducati/Triumph/MV Agusta dealership. So I was able to get plenty of extended seat-time on a Duc S4Rs. And I wish I hadn't. Yea, ride one for a while... it's that good. Maybe it's just that the S4Rs "fit" me better than the Speed Triple, but the power and handling was better, I think. And even though the Speed Triple inspires feats of outrageous hooliganism, the S4Rs promotes inspired RIDING.

If I had the choice, would I pick the S4Rs over the Speed Triple? Dunno. My loyalty to my Speed Triple tells me to pick it over the S4Rs. But to ride that thing...

Just go test-ride one for yourself. You might swing towards Italian.
