I live in Washington state, just north of Seattle (about 35 miles). I bought my 2001 used and it had a Triumph Carbon hi mount can on it. The can crapped out so I replaced it with an M4 Titanium slip on. I bought the bike in the mid west, and now I'm in the Pacific NW.

The problem I'm having is that the bike is running REALLY rich. Turns the pipe black, and blows smoke when not fully hot. I come back from a ride and reek of exhaust. Anybody out there with a Speed Triple with just a slip on in the NW? If so, what map are you running. I normally do ALL of my bike work myself (including the valve adjustments on my Duc 748) but I don't have the scan tool, so I have to go to the dealer for this. They said they would only charge me $75 to do a re-calibration, but it'd be nice to know a little something before I take it in. Bike is bone stock, except the slip on. I read the factory service manual last nite, and it didn't tell me a whole lot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :???:

The maps for an '01 and an'02 are completely different but if you are taking it to Cycle Barn you don't have to worry, those guys are the best around. They remapped mine a couple of times, once at about 3500 miles when it developed a dead spot in the torque band and then just a couple months ago. I had the 12,000 mile service done and had it remapped for the Leo Vince and K&N filter they installed.

You could also investigate Tune Boy. All you need is to download the software and buy the cable, then use your PC or laptop to connect, once you have purchased the license that is!

I have no affiliation with Tune Boy, nor have I used it, but there are others here who have and swear by it. I have also spoken to them and they do seem to know their stuff.

With TuneBoy and TuneEdit, you can address the fueling problem several ways. The first thing to do is check the fuel idle trim. Reducing that value leans things out when you have a closed throttle. You do that with TuneBoy. If that doesn't work, you may have to load a different stock tune. You can get the codes over the internet, but not from Triumph. If the can you had before was straight through, and the one you have now has a baffle, you will have a lot more backpressure, so you may need to put a different set of codes in your bike. If the S3 is anything like a 600, there are codes for a straight through can that have a longer fueling duration than the ones for a baffled can. The longer duration would make you run rich with a baffled can.

Or, maybe you have a problem that is not code related. Your bike has an O2 sensor, if I am not mistaken. It may be malfunctioning, causing problems. That is something to check. There is a way to check them with a multi-meter, but somebody else is going to have to explain that, since I don't remember the exact values you should be looking for.
