Im a bit confused. I sold a chrome messenger bag on another forum. The guy got the bag, but said he is ticked at me because of shipping.

The bag is a chrome bag, about 180$ new. The bag is used, took a few photos and put it online. It's a bit dirty since i used it everyday. I sold it for 50$(something close to it). And asked the guy for 15$ for shipping. He agreed.

When he got the bag he said that it was dirty(it was dirty, but there is a limit on how I can clean something), and that I owed him money because shipping was cheaper. 8$ cheaper. And told me to send him a check for 8$.

Im a bit confused, because he agrees to 15$ and now wants 8$. And I kind of understand the reasoning, but the fact he demanded me to send him the remainder is a bit weird.

I asked him to send the bag back and I will refund him the money. He said no, he wants the bag.

I am going to send him the check. But its strange that he would ask for that.

I really hate people on ebay selling these tiny items then charging 30$ for shipping. But that wasnt what I was doing. I made an estimation and it was pretty close to it. I still needed to get a box, and then put the bag in it, clean it and take it to the post office.

Anyway, Im curious to know what you guys think?

Tell him it cost you more than $8 to package it for shipping. In your photos of the bag, was it clean? Or did you show the bag exactly as you shipped it? If you showed the bag exactly as it was shipped, the the buyer should understand that the bag was used and the reason he was getting it for $50 and not $180 was due to this use.

If he agreed to the shipping charges, then he should keep to this agreement.

A couple of months ago, I bought an engine on e-bay. I paid for crating and shipping charges. Two weeks later the engine is delivered in the back of a truck by two guys that work for the seller - it was neither crated not shipped via the agreed upon carrier.

He simply pocketed the shipping and crating charges, and then was upset that I contacted Ebay concerning this when he didn't respond to e-mails, phone calls, etc. My reply was that if he had kept his word and crated the engine and used the agreed upon carrier, I would not have a complaint.

I never expected my shipping and crating fees to be returned, I just want others to know that this particular seller uses this tactic on items he sells.

Don't send him a check. You had to pay for materials (box, peanuts, tape) and your time to send it. $15 is a reasonable shipping cost.

Keep the change for your effort.

You charged him $15 for shipping. You should have said shipping and handling. Send him a refund - $15 less $7 for postage, $4.59 for the box, $.75 for paper towels and Formula 409, 2.25 for bubble wrap, $.39 for stamp on check = $.02

Guys a 'plick', as they say in Japan :-D

I agree with Catamount. Typically boxes are $3-$5 new. Then there are the other materials and your time to package it. When I sell something on eBay, I put down an estimated shipping price. It beats the hassle of going out to UPS, or the Post Office, and getting an actual shipping charge prior to posting the item. If shipping is more than my original estimate I take the hit, if not, then I'm compensated for my time and materials.

I also buy stuff on eBay all the time where the shipping charge is over the actual amount. If I see a charge that is rediculous ($12 to ship a shirt) then I don't bid. If I don't see the shipping charge listed, I ask the seller what it will be beforehand.

If you've stated what the shipping and handling charge will be prior to his purchase and he has agreed to it, then that's that.

Dude straight up...he is scamming you. You had a contractual agreement. If he thinks he got ripped on the shipping then he should have done research before hand. Everyone knows that shipping and handling charges are always guessed...as a matter a fact when I ship my stuff on ebay I end up with three bucks extra, which I use for insurance...BEGIN RANT because for the life of me, no one likes to use insurance....I lost about $1500 worth of computer equipment because the shipper did not use insurance and the retard from UPS just left it on my front door without requesting a signature....END RANT

I took pics of the bag as it were. I didn't clean it prior to taking the photos. So actually the bag was cleaner when I sent it to him because i took a little time to clean off a bit. But you can't really see details with the photos. But it was a low price item, and i di dnot want to take 100 detail shots.

here are the photos I took

As you can see in the photos, its not a perfect bag. Its got gunk from lettering in the cover. Some gum stuff in the bag.. It isnt perfect.

He agreed to 15USD shipping and that's it. You don't have to return anything unless you agreed that he pays the actual shipping charges.
