I thought i'd share this with y'all since i've gotten a good laugh out of it. This is a picture of me with my patrol car after I had a "parking accident" Our Police Department is in a wooded area near a river, really picturesque.
It'd been one of those nights, just wrapped up a DUI and was heading in to turn in some paper work. At night we dont' really follow any traffic rules let alone parking rules and just pull straight up to the office doors.
The City council has been bugging us about leaving our cars running while parked, after several memos form the Chief, we all turn off our cars now.
So, I turn off my car, but fail to put it in park (like I said I must have had a lot on my mind)
It took a bit to sink in and click when I saw two headlights and a license plate sticking out of the bushes 50 yards away. Honestly I'm pretty lucky that my car wasn't damaged very bad. It rolled out of the parking lot, up a curb accros a section of grass, clipped a tree with the passenger side mirror, rolled over a trail in into some dog woods down a river embankment. I did a little "accident reconstruction" and rolled my car down the parking lot to see how fast it was going, a whopping 10 MPH. It was stopped by the catalytic converters finding some rocks and high centering. Aside from some undercarraige damage that hasn't yet affected the driving, it suffered a small dent to the drivers side door and a broken mirror. About 25' form making it into the river, that would've been bad.
It's been about a week now, the jokes really havn't even slowed down yet. All I can do is bide my time till someone else screws up and takes the heat off me.
LIke I said, it's good for a laugh, thought I'd share it with you.

Very big of you to post that. I admire a guy that readily owns up to a mistake, and all's well that ends well.

But I gotta ask, per your policy adjustment: Is the time saved leaving the car running worth the risk? Around here the tweakers have stolen a few police cars, and I don't think they had the luxury of keys. Nothing's sacred anymore.

Reminds me of the time I totalled a fully marked jet-ski we were using for the 2000 Olympics. A...er...big black dolphin ran out in front of me and sent the thing onto rocks...

We weren't jumping waves at the time...no way, Sir...we've been told not to do that!

:-D :-D :-D

That's too funny!

If only you would have left that DUI in the backseat.

Now THAT would have been hilarious!!!!!

I like it. It takes a good man to laugh at himself.

Glad to see that more damage wasn't done.
