I just read about this in the new cycle world mag. Cannonball Biker Run Cost like 4000$ to enter. If you look around the web site you can find where they going to run in the US. It seems to me that in Europe you just pay fines for speeding. Is that true? You get caught running 100+ mph here you lose a lot more than money.

Depends on the EU country. Some are very tightassed about things (confiscated drivers license on the spot + thousands of euros worth of fines calculated on your yearly taxed income with no upper limit etc.) and others are very biker friendly (police and old grannies giving you the thumbs up on the freeway while you fly past them).

What is the "here you lose a lot more than money" you refer to? Your bike? Over here in the EU you could be fined many times over your bike's value, if you have high enough yearly income.

Lose more than money-you bet . The bears caught two guys running 145 on the 459 and they went to JAIL. That is more than money. Freaks me out to put people in jail for speeding. Guess they did not know what to do with such sociopaths. Ha -I do this once a week!! (not on 459)

From what I understand, a mojority of the guys that do the cannonball run (in cars) are mostly from other countries. So in essence if they get taken to jail.... all they gotta do it post bail and hop on a plane back home.

I don't know how they can pull this off over here. Law enforcement doesn't have much patience with stuff like this. Especially since the prank in Boston and the constant Terror Alert. If all I got was a big fine I would let it all hang out once in a while. I stay out of the public eye on back roads as much as possible. Everyone but me owns a cell phone and 911 can be dialed pretty fast.

Ah, OK. Jailtime did not even pop to my mind in association to speeding. A bit harsh, I must say if that is the first choice of penalty. In Finland you could only be jailed if you repeatedly refused to pay the fines given.

Had to look it up for EU countries (nice table at the bottom of the page):
http://www.roadmc.com/default.asp?pub=0&sub=5&labb=US

Seems that the Norwegians take the price on most ridiculous penalties. 131km/h on a 80km/h country road and you have jail time guaranteed.

Although, if I was given the choice of spending a month in jail or losing over 6 months worth of income, I might prefer to go to jail.

In most states if you get caught at 100+ its mandatory license suspended for one year and jail time. Also you can't get a restricted drivers license (back and forth to work only during certain hours) for most moving violations only DUI.

The prank in Boston? The ***** things were LED's, light brites. They were in 9 cities, including New York. Only Boston assumed they were bombs, and had their bomb squad blow them up. Nothing like over reacting.
If any city should have over reacted, it should have been NYC. They at least were smart enough to realize that it was nothing more than a publicity stunt.
