So the HID lights would need a separate bulb for high beam? Or why is the low/high functionality lost?

HID bulbs are mono so you canot have both beams in a single lens.
You
should get much better light intensity from an HID, typically even better than a highbeam. However to get the maximum advantage a projector lens is required & I'm not sure the stock shell is conducive to obtaining the best results from HID.
Maybe a combination upgrade with something like the Adjure shells would be a good combination.
Another fallacy is the temp rating - higher does not meet brighter! The colour changes as you get higher in temp; the brightest (& whitest) will be at ~ 5100K. 6K is more blue & 8K is purple but the actual usable light output is diminished.
One alternative to retain the high beam function (for flash primarily) would be to only change one light to HID.
Edit - I found
this kit in a Google search: has an available Bi-Xenon bulb option which is supposed to simulate low/high beam operation. This one has the electronic ballast, there is also a cheaper kit with conventional ballast/igniter set-p. The M/C kits do have extended cables.
I have NO idea how effective the BiXenon would be in our application! They're a bit expensive ($778 for pair for Bi-X & Electronic) to be guinea pig on but certainly look interesting. That does drop to about $500 per pair for the non electronic ballast kit.
Disclaimer: NO affiliation of any kind with this product or vendor or even first-hand knowledge of its effectiveness! Just something that turned up on Google!
