anyone ever run a 200 rear tire on their speed triple? when i bought my bike the guy gave me a lightly used dunlop208 200 rear tire, (its got a hole in it that could easily be patched. and the tire on the bike is a 180 (not the stock 190 sized tire). are there any draw backs to running a 200 on the triple? are they better or worse than running a 180? I plan on eventually getting a 190 but see no reason to do it as long as i have 2 tires with a lot of life left in them.
I cannot comment on the tire size question but there was a tire segment on one of the motorcycle shows on Speed Channel this week and their bottom line was to NEVER run a patched tire on a motorcycle. You may want to investigate this advice before putting a patched tire on your bike.
I haven't run an oversize tyre on my S3 as the conventional wisdom bandied about says that having a tyre too large for the rim is dangerous. If you were to run a 200, you'd probably need a rim 1/2 an inch wider. Theoretically it would slow down your rate of turn due to the flatter and larger contact patch you'd achieve by doing so (ie. Kawasaki ZX12R went from 200 down to 190 because of this). Also the relationship between the profile of the conventional front and unconventional rear could lead to handling foibles. I've heard of bikes designed for 190's happily running 180's, but not 200's.
Hmmm, sounds like i'll just trash the tire then. I'm not sure why the guy had it in the first place, I hate to do it cause its hardly been used (just has a pin hole in it from some metal bit).
Oh well, I'll pick up a 190 as soon as the time comes.
