1. Hard starting when cold. Takes three long separate tries before it fires to life.
2. If I accelerate hard and let off the throttle quickly I get a nice "POP!" to scare the kiddies . If I decelerate gradually it will sometimes give a series of muted pops or if I downshift and use engine braking this happens.
3. Chirps increase with RPM but under acceleration are very muted until I stop accelerating.
4. Chirp volume going down the road seems the same as in neutral.
I can hear it ! Weird noise, could be mechanical, try the old screwdriver pressed onto the engine casing to your ear, see if you can pinpoint the area its coming from.
I don't think its exhaust as its coming from the engine area. I haven't ruled out loose spark plug. I don't think its a whistle. Squeak noise doesn't seem to be an air leak. More a mechanical noise.
Why almost silent upon acceleration?
After all these 3 cyl. motors I'm surprised nobody knows this sound/symptom of the problem.
Could be the engine mount rubbers/spacers? The 2014 has one rubber frame block - don't know about yours. I would go around and check all the bolts/spacers are tight
Where exactly are you seeing the white goop?
Each of the throttle bodies has its own individual transition piece, which is installed on the head with an o-ring (so certainly would not need any liquid gasket) and these would typically not be removed for anything regarding maintenance.
Then the throttle bodies just fit into the rubber boots of the transition pieces.
I'll get some more pics and post them here. I'm going to put the centerstand on tomorrow so the bike can run while I move around listening for the source.
Two broken fittings for the SAI (I think). They are oddball fittings. The end that plugs on to the SAI is smaller than the one on the pipe. I may end up jury rigging it by wrapping the cracked fitting with silicone and tape it with electrical tape to keep it in shape. At least until I find new replacement hoses (all three). The corrugated tubing is readily available but not sure about the strange fittings.
Hopefully this is the problem. While in there I cleaned/oiled the K&N air filter and put some new NGK iridium plugs in.
correction: there is no SAI system on my bike. The hoses are for the idle air control valve. No wonder it wouldn't start well. I'll find out by tomorrow if the chirping and all other issues are gone.
Those are the idle control hoses - yes, leaks there will definitely cause idle issues.
Be sure you replace them on the correct nipples - there are four, but one of them is occluded. Obviously they go on the three open nipples.
After I got home from work tonight I tried starting it again before I started ripping things out. After second try it fired up and I let it idle a while. I shut it down for about 10 min. and tried again - fired up better than ever.
I took it out for about 30 min. and all the bad is gone and all the good that should have been there is present. I'm eager to see how it starts up from cold but I don't have time to wait as I have to get to bed.
If it fires up the first time when cold it will be the first time since I've owned the bike as of the end of March this year.
I really have to get back to it in the near future and replace all three hoses. Finding where the hoses go is simple if you lose track. the far right spigot on the IAC is for the far right cyl. The next spigot over to the left, middle cyl. Next one over toward the left (this is all from a rider's point of view) is for the 3rd cyl. The furthest left spig. is for nothing at all (at least on a 3 cyl. bike).

Now that I mull it over it makes sense Decosse. The IAC should be timed by the ECU to adjust air. Since there isn't a single throttle body like on a car it should time the IAC to let air in based on which cylinder it knows it's firing.
It has nothing to do with timing, the outlet manifold is common to all the hoses; it does not meter individually to one port vs any other. Air will flow to whichever throttle body's inlet valve is open.
and flows the required volume of air to maintain the rpm (as average)

I had a similar problem today. It sounded like a squeek from a bearing in the engine. Loudest while trying to start and at idle.
I have fix my similar chirping. My chirping started after I put my throttle body back on the engine.
I recently had my throttle body and IACV off. When I put the OACV back together I had the electrical connecter plug on the left side pointing towards the left. I pulled the IACV apart and rotated the bottom half 180 degrees so the electrical conector is pointing towards the right (centre of the bike). Put the airbox back on. Started the bike and the mechanical chirping sound was gone.
I know my IACV hoses are ok as i just had them off the bike and inspected them.
