What happens if we get caught at speeds over say 130mph in the US and particularly in NY ? I mean is there a speed point above which the consequences are different (like .... arrest ! or I don't know what, license removal) ?

Also, if you are making say 150mph, are they going to catch you ??

I got arrested up in Maine once for criminal speeding (their interpretation was that 30+ mph over the speed limit was criminal). Back then (1987) it was a $100 fine.

ouououochhh ! that makes it pretty much really not responsible to go at decent speeds. I should just give up the bike entirely what is the point of haveing a S3 or any non harley type cruiser thing, if we can't go fast ? And I mean fast and safely, which is totally possible.

I can't speak for all states but in Arizona speeds that high are considered reckless and you get slapped with a reckless driving ticket that is 5 points off your license and a HUGE cash fine. A good friend got pinched doing 119 in a 55 and they wanted to haul him off to jail, he talked his way out of jail but did pay a whopping fine.

In the long run it's much cheaper to hit the track if you want to let it all hang out....

I guess Arizona is not that bad after all, of course on a relative basis. The only time I was pulled-over, so far, for speeding, was here in Manhattan. I was only making 80mph that day, but the limit is 40mph on that particular road and they gave me a ticket (not huge, can't remember though) and 9 points which I remember because it meant that I had left just 2 points.

As a note, that happened on the FDR Drive, which is a long and fast road, no lights and virtually no traffic early in the morning when I go to work. I wanted to make this point because I would not want anyone to think I am just a speed idiot. I only like to speed from time to time but only when it is safe, ie no traffic and clear wide roads.

Yes, you are absolutely right, going to the track is indeed the thing to do, and gee I would love to do that. But that is a whole project, and I beliebe expensive too.I wil work on it even though I doubt there is any track near manhattan. But, yes, I will work on it !!!

I found this list that gives you information by state at which point you're considered "reckless".
State Speeding Laws

It was updated on july 22nd this year, so it should be somewhat close to the truth.

I personally don't enjoy the wind buffeting much over 100 so I just don't spend much time up at those speeds.

First off I ride everyday to work. 20 years now. Yes I have wrecked on numerous occasions (many story's).

My average Highway speed is 100 mph when no one else is around. I live in the North Georgia mountains (the country). My average expressway speed is 110 to 120.

I have NEVER gotten stopped for going high speeds. I just get stopped for piddly little crap like 60 in a 45, (2 weeks ago).

Anyway My personal opinion is that we abolish speed limits altogether. Speed limits (especially on expressways SUCK).

I personally don't like speed limits either.... When I want to speed. I've known a couple of guys who've overcooked it and died, as a result of excessive speed whilst riding their bikes........... There's gotta be some kind of deterrent/reminder in the even where your own personal judgement is is incorrect (and is DOES happen - who hasn't had a crash??)... It's all well and good to talk about revenue raising with the fines but if we didn't have speed limits I'd trade the S3 in on something like a TANK after seeing some of the drivers out there! We, as motorcyclists with great experience of high performance vehicles should not be treated the same way as a half blind granny... but where does the government draw the line?? I second JBnAZ
... take the bike to the track, wear good full leathers, a back protector, and a decend helmet and go crazy!! Just my two cents worth....

Windwaves,
Riding fast on the FDR early in the morning IS going to raise a HUGE flag ..
This is the lull of the city....At least stop and get a box of donuts to strap on the bike ... You DO know how the NYPD love donut's don't you ?.... :-D

PS...When I see what goes on in NYC, I am AMAZED that they even bother giving speeding ticket's !! It seem's trivial ... The biggest joke is the Traffic Dept in the brown cars down there...

quackster,
I have sped on the FDR for a couple of years. I used to work in Wall Street, and since I live on the upper east side it was just a perfect commute.

I can tell you I have always gone fast, particularly in the last portion, slowing down just before the brooklyin bridge and then opening up to enjoy the accelartion from 2nd gear up easily reaching 140mph (which real is probaly 120mph). From the brooklyn bridge you can see virtually all the way to the end of the FDR and there are rarely any cars there early in the morning, but you can see everything and particularly if there are any cops. The one time I was pulled over I was probably not going fast enough. A motorcycle cop got me and I could tell he was stressed out like hell - he looked like he had just finished the 24hrs Le Mans ! I was just making 80mph !!!
