A while back, I read a few posts that mention not using the engine kill switch to shut down the bike, but just instead turn the ignition to off with the key.

If i recall correctly from my MSF course, they recommend developing a habit of using the engine kill switch when shutting off the bike. But not sure if it matters that we were learning on carburated bkes and not fuel injected.

What's the recommended method? Is one really that much better than the other? :???:

i don't use mine. just the key.
but i have accidentally had a friend push it, and nothing ever happened. i have read here in the past that there's a small glitch so to speak that isn't kill-switch friendly, and the general consensus was to use the key.

I do not know which is better and/or why......

I just know the owners manual says to always turn it off at the key. I figure the Engineeres know something I don't.

With that being said, it also says to then flip the kill switch to the OFF position to avoid discharging the battery, which seems odd, cause I can't imagine what would drain the battery if the ignition is off. But again, I've gotten in the habit of doing that also.

I wonder if the key is turned to the Park position, if the lights still stay on if the kill switch is off also???

I think that the kill switch absolutely insures that there is NO electrical stuff on whatsoever.

I dunno, I think it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, but since they say don't use it, I don't. I too have had a friend cut the bike off using it, with nothing bad happening. Until I purchased speedy, I always used the kill switch. And I've had 2 FI bikes before speedy. It has nothing to do with FI, just sumt'n with speedy! :hammer:

I used to use the kill switch (what I was also taught in the MSF course), but it does develop or cause a glitch with the engine management computer that would eventually cause the engine management light (EML) to illuminate.

From what I've been told, using the kill switch is the same as yanking the cord for your home computer out of the wall while it's running, which can't be good.

Using the key to turn off (while the kill switch is in the 'on' position) allows the management computer to do its proper shut down routine...

That's basically what I've heard too. Like I said though, speedy is the 1st bike ever that I've owned that I've heard this about! :hammer: Why did they design it like this? I dunno, and I don't care, I just do what they say, it doesn't make sense, but what the hay, I love speedy anyways! :-D

definitely seems to make sense about the whole yanking the cord thing.. will adjust my shut down routine, and just turn the key first and then flip the kill switch.

I always use the kill switch and then the key only because I normally have both hands on the handle bar yet. Clutch pulled in and maybe a finger on the front brake for stability.

Never had an issue with it either way. Maybe a 2001 isn't as finicky.

The first time I took my S3 into the dealer, the service guy mentioned this to me. He said they'd had a history of people's bikes having problems with the switch quitting working after a lot of use. This, naturally, would render the bike a little difficult to use.

Therefore, they recommend that buyers kill with the key, just like you're all saying. So, I changed my old habits and I'm used to it now, no big deal.
