The overheat light on my bike keeps coming on, but just barely. When the sun is out you can barely see the light come on, and it never comes on all the way. I checked the coolant level and even the crankcase oil, jiggled the wire leads going into the radiator and it still comes on just a little bit.

My first thought is that I should change the thermostat, but first I wanted to find out if other people with 885 triples had run into this and found out something else was causing it.

Also, the light seems to come on at speed, and it fades completely out at idle, which is the reverse of what you would normally expect if the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Any help with this would be most appreciated.

These bikes are known to occasionally have a bad temperature sensor. I'd check that first.

Sounds like the temp sensor is going bad. Remember all these do is reduce resistance to ground , the higher the temp the lower the resistance the brighter the bulb , BUT at speed you have a higher volatge on the battery and if the sensors resistance is a tad low with higher battery voltage the bulb may glow a little but at idle the lower volatge may not make the bulb glow.
