I'm not sure about that. With the Husky, the trans was a close ratio, and I could let the clutch out quickly and spin the wheel. It's worth a try on the speed, especially with some of you with 17 T fronts.

It doesn't work. Oh, launching in second will keep the front end down, but it will also slow your ET considerably and is hard on your clutch. You have to slip the clutch so much that you just creep off the line and it's difficult to keep from killing the engine. It's quite a different animal from a MX bike.

On a side note I had my best reaction time ever last night: .001 seconds. Almost a perfect light!

Okay, now back to the topic...

I drag race mine all the time, and am going out tonight to give it a right thrashing.

As you probably know, when drag racing you specifically do not want to wheelie. Why? It wastes energy in vertical movement that can be used for forward momentum. Strapping your forks down is one way to help keep the front end down, but I haven't gone that route yet. Maybe next season.

Here's what I do. Grab a full handful of throttle (because the S3 has a long throttle throw) but only twist it about half way. Hold it at about 5500 RPM until the launch. Here's the secret: When you launch, do not twist the throttle at all. Hold it at about half throttle while you slip the clutch. What you want to do is get off the clutch as fast as possible, and only then give it full throttle. Never give this bike full throttle while slipping the clutch- you'll find it impossible to keep the front end down.

Alternately, launch at about 3000 RPM and gradually give it more throttle as you slip the clutch. This is tricky, and I don't have nearly as much success that way. Slower ET as well.

Not long ago I got my best time ever. 11.23 seconds in the 1/4 mile, at 122 MPH. We have good air tonight, so I'm hoping to equal or better that. Assuming we don't have a headwind, which is common.

Good Post!

My buddy Alan and I will get REALLY drunk and wait till we both have to take a p!ss real bad. Then we go and stand on the far end of the bar. When the bag of corn nuts hits the floor we take off. The winner gets the bathroom (only one stall) and the loser gets to do the pee pee dance.
I always win. Got MY reaction time down to a fart and a giggle.

Thanks TonUp. That was the high-point of the night. I actually have a couple of friends with .000 perfect light stickers (One guy has a whole row of them on his trailer. The Jerk.)

The bad news is I was in a small accident with Speedy about two hours ago. More to follow, so watch for the thread. Need pictures and to calm down.

dirt bike racers launch in 2nd, first is a wasted gear most of the time 2nd and 3rd are known to be the most important

they also use a device which do lock the forks in a lower position, once the front brake is tapped they come right back up, such a simple device which has really revolutionized the starts
