The low fuel light has been coming on lately on my bike when the tank is still over half full. It will stay on for a couple of miles, then shut off. Is there any known issue with these?

I've had the same issue before. Shut the bike down and fire it back up and all is back to normal.

I never trust that dohicky anyway. 100-110 miles and it's time for fuel.

Probably right, it's a twot of a sensor.

I haven't investigated the layout of the tank, but might it be that the sensor is in one side (the same side as the fuel pickup)?

If so, if you're riding in a straight line for a while, the level in that side might get low and trigger the fuel light. Then you go around a corner, brake, or accelerate and some fuel sloshes over from the other side and turns the fuel light off.

As I said, I don't know whether that's possible on our S3s, but I've had exactly this "problem" on past bikes and the above story explained it.

For 1050 bikes, use contact cleaner on the fuel pump/level plug contacts - do not use grease or silicone.

Then remove the tank filler neck and reach inside and bend the float arm downward just a bit. It is just a stiff wire with a float on the end. If your hands are big, you will need to remove the pump/level assembly from the bottom of the tank.

This will lower the fuel level when the light is turned on. One gallon is a bit much reserve for a 4.5 gallon tank. Who needs 28.5 % of their tank's capacity as reserve?

I hope this helps.

If there is any kind of vacuum in the tank , IE: the tip-over valve isn't in the correct position, it will make the low fuel light come on early.

I had to zip-tie mine so it would stay vertical. No more fuel light probs after that.
