I have been looking at Monsters lately, and have almost decided to get one, but i realized that i am being a little closed minded. I know triumphs are great bikes, and the looks of the Speed Triple are great.

Will anyone be able to explain/talk me out of the Monster, and why the Speed Triple is a better bike? :hammer:

Ride each one and decide. Should be pretty easy...

I have a 05S3 and love it,it's torquey, handley, sexy and it just goes on and on.Rode my mates Monster on the weekend, given it handled good but it was too low to the ground(footpegs in corners) and was a c*#t for vibration and you had too keep the thing reving all the time or it chugga chugged,i thought a v twin you could let lug like my old TL1000R but this thing did not like it at all.Not like Speedy with it's set and forget gearbox.Go the SPEEDY you wont regret it. :hammer:

when i first moved to SF (san francisco) all i was inspired by was the monsters. very sexy bike, VERY sexy sound! (better than S3) -- but in raw performance i went with the S3.
and the monsters were over-priced, excessive valve maintenance, and price.
the S3 won out of sheer performance and affordability. and hell, it's styled quite a bit nicer.

--- note: when asking my wife in the showroom "so do you see what bike i will be killed on?" she pointed to the bike i passed on the show room floor - the S3. (it wasn't placed as visually forward as the ducatis.)

i honestly think the S3 is the more critical choice.

Nice!

They are both good bikes. Make the decision yourself and post the same question on a Monster board so you don't get biased answers.

Which Monster are we talking about here? The vintage air cooled Monster 1000 or a MS4Rs? They are from quite different categories, other is a competitor for Buells and such more leisurely rides and the other is in the streetfighter category with the Triple.

If you are talking about the air cooled bikes, then you are comparing apples to oranges and it is not really a worthwile comparison at all.

The MSR4s has superior chassis components, classic styling, comparable engine performance, ugly pipes-all-over-the-place engine that is ment to be hidden under the 999 plastics, way higher purchase and maintenance costs.

So if cost is not an issue for you, the the choice is only down to personal preference. On the S3 you get engine performance on a similar level and adequate suspension+brakes+chassis for much much less money, so if cost matters, then the S3 wins.

Martin is right, which Monster?

If you are looking at the Monster please do take a look at the Aprilia Tuono R, it is the only italian choice for me if I was not getting the triple.

And of course The MV Augusta Brutale 910R is my number one choice even as a stablemate to the S3.

My brother is waiting on a Monster 1000 s2r. He wanted the 999 Monster, but was too pricey. If I were buying over again, it would probally be the triple, but the Tuono is tempting. If that 999 Monster was the same price as the Triple, I would go with the Monster. I don't have to worry about that, so in the real world Triple is the King.

When I had my '01 Speed Triple, I demo'd a Moster S4R. I was totally dissapointed. I really expected it to be a lot like my Aprilia RSV Mille, but it wasn't. The speed triple has gobs more useable torque, and it felt much more solidly built.

The S4R is a beautiful bike, but it just didn't deliver for me.
