I've just bought a 2001 S3 thats has not been started for 2 years. The bike has been under cover during this time but was not 'stored' because it was believed the owner was going to pick it up after servicing.

The bike looks immaculate and has only 16k on the clock. A new battery has been ordered.

My question: Apart from the obvious of a fresh tank of petrol and a full service (oil change etc) are there any particular problems I should be aware of with an S3 thats been standing for such a long time?

I do mean S3 specific, general possible problems I am well aware of, the chain, sprockets and tyres are all of good condition.

Could the injectors have gummed up? Starter motor problems etc. All input gratefully received.

I'll bet with a tank of fresh gas, new battery and some fuel injector cleaner in the fresh fuel, it'll start right up and run as smooth as they day it was new.

I would also take a serious look at the tires. 2 years of just standing, If it were me, I would just have the replaced with fresh rubber,

Make sure the service includes new plugs. They get corroded and can keep you from starting it.

nice. congrats.

however, nobody has asked the most important question? what happened to the previous owner who was supposed to pick it up? ran ouf of $$ to pay repairs? died? never came back?

I picked up a 2000 under almost this exact scenario.

It had been sitting uncovered in a garage for 2 years. (all the red buttons had faded from the sun coming in the window everyday)

Ok soooooo here is what was needed.

With fresh gas and battery it fired up after cranking for 3 whole seconds and it rode 18 miles home.

It needed an oil change of course.

LOOK AT THE COOLANT. After sitting for 2 years it was the color and consistancy of chocolate milk.

Tires looked fine except for "weather cracks" So new tires were in order.

And then just a bit of chain lube and it has been running like a spotted-ass ape for a year now.

I love my green-monster.

Cheers all

I picked up the bike today, fresh petrol and a new battery and it started right up. Tyres were fine. Tomorrow complete fluid change.

I actually know the previous owner, as I said earlier the bike was left at the house of another friend for servicing. The owner then got 'loved up' and moved to Wiltshire with his new girl friend and asked our mutual friend to look after the bike for him. Two years later the owner phoned up and asked him to sell it for him (reason unknown). All paperwork is correct and no outstanding credit aggreements etc. So, advantage BloodAxe :-D

This bike is awsome and once again thanks for all the advice.
