Im having a bit of problems ever since I installed a high mount exhaust on my 2000 speed triple. I used to have the factory exhaust, and had no problems.
After I installed the high mount(I believe its the triumph can), I went for a ride, it started by backfiring. But now it has more problems, I pulled it out of the garage one day and it did not start, I had to turn the throttle to start it. If I keep it idling it will die. And basically backfires at idle all the time and dies.
I took it to the triumph dealer, because I was told I needed a remap. Okay, he said instead to try some stabil fuel addtive. Tried that, but it didnt work.
So I just went back to the dealer and asked him to remap, and he said he couldnt today, but he said it might not be the remaping, it could be some bad oring(I forgot what he said). But he said the chances that the remap will work are slim.
Anyone have some advice on what this could be?
The bike has 65,000 miles and Ive never had an issue with it.

Lets see here, if you retrace your mods you will find the source of your problems.
You've done that already, the new pipe is the source of your problems.
Try another dealer for a remap. If you have a Power Commander or Tune Boy you can upload your own new map.
You may try other sources of getting answers to your problems, unless you have a problem with which color is faster.

When was the last time you had your bike tuned?
Has it sat for long periods of time without running?
That is where I would start.
Plugs, filter and oil.

Here's my 2 cents;
Backfire might have blown a leak in your intake track. This would result in way too lean mixture, and cause engine to shut down at idle. At throttle the exess fuel will backfire in the undamaged cylinders.
There's a old trick to find vacuum leaks, but be carefull!!! Keep the engine running and spray a little start-help or brake cleaner on your intakes grommets. If the rpm's go up you've found your leak.

took the bike in today.. Annnnd
Nothing, after remapping it did nothing. The mechanic told me that my battery was very low.. And didn't give me any advice to what this could be, they all seemed clueless.
They tried 3 maps, and nothing.
I went home and installed this 3 exhaust pipe I had before with no problems, and the bike seemed alot better. But it still idled badly, but not quite as bad as the high mount exhaust.
Someone told me on advrider that maybe I burned a valve because I did not remap the exhaust soon enough, could this be the problem??

Hi Roadkill, I can';t be sure, but if it's just at idle, I'd be starting with plugs, then looking at the inlet manifolds and balance, followed by coils.
Remember the TOR maps do actually give you a richer lower rev range, why I'm not sure, but when I had the TOR in my '99 it blew black smoke down low and constantly needed to have a good thrashing to clear it. I went back to stock and have had no problem since.
There is no reason really that the new pipe would cause such a drastic change, it may have made it run rich, it could simply be co-incidence. So, I'd go back the the standard map and start from scratch.
1) New plugs and while you have them out, perhaps do a compression test.
2) Check the Idle stepper motor - might need the manual for that, I'm not sure how to check it off hand.
3) Check all the coils are good and the connections are solid
4) Check for air intake leaks around the inlet manifolds
5) Check you have all the exhaust manifolds in right and that they don't leak
6) Balance the inlets, you'll need a 3 way balancer for that, but you can get them at a parts store cheap, or borrow one.
I'm sure if you take it step by step, you'll find the problem, but start simple and don't worry about serious unless simple doesn't fix it.
Good luck ol mate! (See, more technical and no color bashing! :-)
Mick

Thanks MIker, since the triumph dealer is unable to do anything I need to figure this out myself!
I was thinking of buying a power commander? Will this work?
The bike runs better with the old exhaust, but still idles badly.
This TOR high mount is nice looking, but very loud! Now im thinking of getting another exhaust, perhaps another micron or something.
