I know this has been discussed before but I have never been able to get the search function to give me any results.

I am coming up on my 21k oil change and I was thinking about using Shell Rotella T. Has anyone had clutch problems using this oil?

Besides the obvious argument of motorcycle oil vs. car oil, why not simply choose a product that supports the motorcycle community?

Motul 7100 Synthetic
Motorex Top Speed 4T Synthetic
Maxima Maxum 4 Synthetic
Bel Ray EXS Synthetic

Just another perspective...

At the dealership they sing the praise of mobil 1. Is this stuff different than auto store mobil one? If it is (something about friction additives) do the others you mentioned have it also?

Mobil ! Racing 4T is the motorcycle oil. Tis different from Mobil 1 Auto oil.

Motul 7100. Meets API SL/SH/SG Jaso MA. For 4 stroke cycles with catalytic converters. Ester technology improves engine response. Low sulfer and phosphorus formula.

Motorex Top Speed 4T Synthetic. Synthetic perfomance. Top-class 4-stroke motorcycle oil. For easy starting and gear-changing, lower fuel and oil consumption. Excellent lubrication properties. SAE 10W/50 and SAE 5W/50/

Maxima Maxum 4 Synthetic. 4-Cycle Motorcycle Specific Oil
10w40 & 15w50 Extra - 100% Synthetic

Bel Ray EXS Synthetic. EXS was developed in superbike competition and meets Service Classifications API, SG, CCMC G5.

Thanks Limey! :-D

Basically, you want an oil that meets JASO-MA certification, which basically means no friction modifiers. A motorcycle-designated oil typically (but not always) has a higher amount of Phosphorous and Zinc. Motorcycle oil is treating the crank, the transmission, and wet clutch, whereas car oils are basically just lubbing the crank, cams, etc.

And yes, the Mobil 1 motorcycle oil is different from their Mobil 1 car oil...check out their website.

That's your lesson for the day class. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

FWIW - over in the S4 forums, there are a fair number of proponents for Mobil1 'Extended Performance' Synthetic oil. It's the top of the line of Mobil's new & confusing tiers of oil. The Speed 4's call for 15w50 oil - I'm not sure what Speed Triples want.

The nice thing about using the Mobil1 is getting a fully synthetic oil for less per quart than your average dino motorcycle oil.

My bike has 6k on it, and I've been running it since about 1500 miles with no problems.

By the way - vastly superior to the search function on this site is using google - you can type in site:triumphrat.net (stuff to search for) and it will limit the search to this site.

Just an interesting bit to further confuse us all. It does not mention anything concerning additives for clutches though. Physics prof. studies oil

I got a bunch of hits using the search function at the bottom of the "All Forums" page (the one for the TriumphRAT.net, not Google). I just typed in "Rotella" and hit return. That gave me a full page of hits just on this site. I know that there are a bunch of other sites out there that discuss using the Rotella. I believe they all recommend the synthetic, which is Rotella T, IIRC. Hope this helps.

I haven't used it, as I don't put that many miles on my bikes each year. From the reading, I think it is probably a very good oil and would not be averse to trying it in my bikes. For folks that do put a lot of miles on, it's likely a very good alternative.

Post your results with it if you do decide to go that way.
