OK, so I'm new to the world of naked sport bikes and have noticed something. When I let go of the throttle on my triple, it slows down in a hurry! Is this common?

I realize we're comparing apples/oranges here, but my other bikes will coast quite a way before I feel like I am actually slowing down.

I'm guessing this is due to flywheel weight as well as actual vehicle weight (my rigid is only 75 lbs heavier than the S3 though) but thought I'd ask around. My triple brakes aren't dragging or anything like that, it just surprised me when I let off throttle at highway speeds (65 mph, still doing breakin).

It's normal. The triumph stunt rider even mentions that is one of the things he loves about the S3.

I had noticed the same thing. I only rode one other sport bike and it did not seem to shut down as fast as the S3. Does anyone know why this actually happens so abruptly?

With any luck I should be picking up a 2006 S3 next week so expect more questions. ; )

Thats funny, all in perspective I guess. This thing has no where near the engine braking of either of my Aprilias or my Ducati.

It is a matter of gearing, displacement, compression ratio, valve timing, number of cylinders and rotating inertia (flywheel). Harleys typically have relatively low compression and HUGE flywheels so they just keep on rolling when you let off. A lot of sport bikes have so little flywhell and so much engine braking they have special back torque limiting clutches to keep the back wheel from skidding on downshifts.

It's a wonderful thing! I use engine braking a lot.

ohh..its a beautiful thing , engine braking with the Speed Triple... just close the throttle at speed and just listen to the thing. sounds like its backfiring, misfiring or whatever...this thing has soo much character, so far from a sewing machine inline four.
although I did get worried I might be damaging the engine by doing it often. I roll it on and off the throttle most of the times in city riding
