I was curious as to how different the new Speed Triple is from its previous incarnation. I’d read all the differences, but it’s hard to get a visual with specs only. Even comparing photos can be difficult because of lighting, depth of field, lenses, etc. So I decided to compare them directly. Using Photoshop, I took two side views – a red 2004 and a white 2006 – and resized them until they were the same and overlaid them. The one thing that seems identical is the bolt pattern on the engine, so I used that as a reference point. They’re marked with yellow arrows.

I’m surprised how similar the geometry is. The 06 looks slightly taller at the tank and seat, wheelbase and steering angle seem a touch different, and the rear tire looks taller – although, that may just be the types of tires on the bikes in the photos. The frames look identical also. The only reason they aren’t as dark as the engine is because one is silver, the other is black.

My point with all of this is that I’ve been considering an 06 but it looked like the whole bike was considerably smaller than it was before and I was curious as to how much. Turns out it isn’t smaller. It just looks like it because of the lack of a tail section.

Anyway, I still haven’t decided between a 2006 Speed Triple or Sprint, but thought you might find the comparison interesting.

These are the two photos I used.

That's about where I stand too.. I love the look of the Triple but think the Sprint might fit my needs better (sorry guys). The Triple really looks like it was built for the solo rider with only an occasional passenger use. Those rear pegs are ridiculously high putting a passenger in the "leap frog" pose. I'd like to take some nice long tours through Europe by bike (with a passenger and luggage) so the Sprint will most likely be my final choice. But... there will always be a sparkle in my eye when I see a Speed Triple.
I wonder if Triumph is planning any 2 for 1 sales in the near future...

I've seen a few S3 guys actually flip their rear pegs to the opposite sides to put the passenger's feet further forward and down behind the rider's...

I'm almost the opposite. I think the new Sprint may be one of the best looking bikes to ever carry the Triumph badge. However, the heat issue is a concern for me. Not a deal-breaker, but a concern.

I've always dug the Speed Triple in any of it's stages. Truthfully though, I didn't like this new one at first but it's grown on me. As far as trips are concerned, I do a lot of multi-day trips but never with a passenger and I always travel light. I just do laundry every couple of days. The Triple would be fine for that. In fact, I'm thinking it may actually be a little more comfortable because of the handlebars. On the Sprint, I felt more pressure on my hands than I do on my 95 Triple which has the clips above the triple clamp.

At this point, I'm undecided. Somehow, the new Speed Triple just suddenly spoke to me about two weeks ago and complicated the decision. I'll go for another test ride Saturday.

Scratch should be along shortly posting a rolling eyes smiley or the hammer-weilding smiley - and rightly so. I've just about made a career out of picking out a new bike.

Great pic, thx. Makes my brains go a little bit batty after staring at it too long. It answered a question for me, which was: Would the 1050 tank fit on the 955? The answer seems to be 'no' since there seems to be much more gradual slope in the rear of the 1050 tank.

I think Racecomp said the 1050 tank is interchangeable with the 955i (02-04, not 98-01). SO, if you really wanted to, you could have a 1050 with an 02-04 955i tank and a T509/595 subframe and tail swap...
