I had this issue posted before. I have no idea where the post is anymore, cuz searching on this site is terrible.

I had my bike painted a couple of months ago and after reassembly have had some intermittent problems with start up. I know there are others with start issues, but mine doesn't even always fire even when warm so I'm not sure it's 100% the same. Also, yesterday it took 15-20 minutes of fiddling to get her to start. I had ridden 20 miles from home and let it sit 20 mins or so. It may not have been hot but still was not cold. I thought I was going to be stranded. My gas light was on this time, so I wheeled her to the gas station next door and topped it off just to see what happened. This didn't seem to help. I shook the gas around in the tank in the case there was some debris in there blocking something. This made no difference.

When I had it painted I disassembled the tank myself, had the paint work done by a professional who paints bikes all the time and is used by a reputable local bike shop (one reputable of many shops), and put it back together. Everything should have been dust free. The tank was fully taped off proper during paint work. It was covered properly overnight when initially removed before going to the painter. I did not untape until I assembled. All O-Rings were replaced with new ones when put back together. I was very careful overall.

Per suggestions in my previous (and now lost) post, both breather hoses on the left underside have been checked and are fine. There is no vacuum issue when the bike doesn't start.

The bike turns over and over and over and over and over and does not fire. This problem did not occur before the paint though it has always been slow to start. When I started it initially right after reassembly there was no issue. It has happened about 10 times in the past couple of months. I fear something is wrong due to assembly/reassembly but have no idea what it could be. Or it could be totally unrelated. When I took it to the shop about two weeks ago for a Service Bulletin I mentioned this and they noticed nothing wrong.

I will check the plugs when I have the time. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

I have had my tank off a few times, I always have a starting problems.

I have changed the plugs to irridiums... no diffrence.
I have put in hotter plugs... No diffrence.

I was told that I needed 5 mm of play in the throttle for the TPS... No diffrence
And, I don't like that much play.

Next is to get bike started WITHOUT ANY THROTTLE, Let idle with fan blowing on radiator for 15 min... repeat if nessesary.

I guess this is suppose to resets something.

Apparently, You are not suppose to twist the throttle while starting... EVER!

I am dropping the bike off to the shop for re-map...
If I get a solution to the hard starting issue, I will pass it on.

I actually had this problem a few months ago. Totally pissed me off. The secret is......DO NOT touch the throttle at all when starting the bike. I've never had the issue again. Starts right up. Good luck

i used the throttle a handful of times in the past which did help it start for me, but i have since stopped. since i got stuck the other day for a while, i'm not sure it's the cure for me.

Dunno if this would help, but having painted the tank have you excluded the possibility of some paint particles or other unwanted guests blocking the filters/system?

entirely possible and not ruled out. not sure this would be the case. as i mentioned everything was very well covered during the painting, before it, and after it so if there's anything i don't think it's paint. also why i've tried to shake up the gas in the can a bit before filling. this never seems to help. may have to remove all the gas, pull ou the entire fuel pump cluster, and take a looksie unless someone has a better idea. also need to look at and change plugs.

could pick up a tune boy or PC to play with some mappings to see if somehow that helps, but that's also a lot of money for guesswork.

basically, i dont want to do a ton of unnecessary work so i want as much feedback as possible before doing anything. keep the info coming.

The friggin thing is sulking since you painted it tombstone grey :-D Seriously I would look into something in the tank, it usually ends up being the thing that you discount the most.
