The coils on these early (T300) Triumphs did have a tendency to start leaking spark. There's an easy check for this: Fire up the bike in the dark and look up under the tank. Look for sparks and arcing. It will be particularly bad if the bike is at all wet. Also, listen for a sharp "snapping" sound.
This doesn't necessarily show a bad coil, but it's a place to start.
A couple of people I know with this problem have solved it by coating the coils in that rubber "Tool Handle Dip" product. It's available at most home improvement stores that carry tools. Just paint it on in three or five coats. It worked for me!
Coils for these are stupidly expensive, so it's worth it to try a few cheap fixes first. The coils are small boxes of plastic bolted to the frame, one for each cylinder.
I would change plugs as well, to rule this out. These bikes run well with a slightly hotter plug. Use NGK DPR8EA
Is it time for a valve adjust? This could cause your problem.
Also, are you sure your idle mixture is set correctly? It should be 2.5 turns out from lightly seated. If the caps are still over the screws you will need to drill and remove them. From the factory the mixture can be as far as 1 turn off!
