We're Number Two!

I wonder how many of those were during Bike Week. Might skew the stats.

Not only am I in the top state for MC theft, but the nation's LEADING city (modesto) for autotheft. Makes me wanna grab a gangbanger by the throat and cut him from neck to nuts. I do however get to knock em out on a regular basis at work. A couple weeks ago one didn't wake up until after the ambulance got there. Nigh' night, sweetheart.

Since state populations vary so widely, that's a misleading way to look at it. Of course, we'd like to look at theft rates (thefts per 100,000 motorcycles). Since I couldn't find motorcycles per state with a quick Google search, I calculated thefts per 100,000 residents for the states in xSpeed3x's list. This shows a different pattern (though R100 is still number two!):

1. Arizona - 48.0
2. Florida - 39.6
3. North Carolina - 37.9
4. Indiana - 36.0
5. Texas - 27.6
6. California - 26.9
7. Georgia - 26.4
8. Ohio - 22.7
9. Pennsylvania - 16.5
10. New York - 11.6

Strange, I've heard for a while that Hawaii is number one on bike theft stats followed by Cali then Florida.

For once, New Jersey doesn't make it to the top of a list for crime, theft, etc.
Please, no armpit of America comments after these findings....

I went to the full list and calculated average annual motorcycle thefts per 100,000 residents for 2004 and 2005. I'd argue that this statistic is more relevant to assessing the probability of having your bike stolen. It's quite a different story than the simple list provided by the NICB.

Here's the full list:

1 Nevada 54.9
2 South Carolina 48.9
3 Arkansas 47.3
4 Arizona 44.3
5 New Mexico 42.9
6 Florida 42.0
7 North Carolina 38.3
8 Oklahoma 36.7
9 Maryland 36.1
10 Indiana 34.8
11 Washington 32.4
12 Colorado 31.7
13 Missouri 30.2
14 Kentucky 28.7
15 Mississippi 28.7
16 Georgia 28.2
17 Texas 27.9
18 California 27.1
19 Delaware 26.6
20 Oregon 25.0
21 Alabama 23.2
22 Ohio 22.8
23 District of Columbia 22.7
24 Idaho 21.6
25 Tennessee 21.2
26 Utah 20.4
27 Wyoming 20.4
28 Virginia 20.1
29 Kansas 19.9
30 Louisiana 19.1
31 Montana 18.7
32 New Hampshire 18.4
33 Alaska 18.3
34 Iowa 17.5
35 Massachusetts 17.5
36 Michigan 17.4
37 Connecticut 16.7
38 Pennsylvania 16.4
39 Minnesota 16.0
40 New Jersey 15.9
41 Wisconsin 13.6
42 Rhode Island 12.8
43 New York 12.7
44 West Virginia 10.9
45 Illinois 10.6
46 Vermont 10.1
47 Nebraska 9.7
48 Hawaii 9.4
49 Maine 8.4
50 South Dakota 7.9
51 North Dakota 4.9

And how does that list tie in with gun ownership?
Vermont with liberal guns laws seems near the bottom of the list.
