Well I did something dumb last night- and will most likely have to pay for it.

I've always been very dilegant when it comes to updating my car/bike's registration, insurance, inspection etc. With that short preface, here's my "lack of good judgement" story from last night.

So I've been working on a 93 GS500 for a buddy- trying to get it running for the past month ago. Last night (after reassembly from a piston ring check), I finally managed to get it going. It was about 9:00, my buddy and I were real excited.

Well anyway like a fool, I took it out for a short ride around town to see how it ran. It is not registered nor inspected. Used to being in upstate NY, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal.

So I'm in front, he's in back in his truck in case it breaks down. I pull over and signal him to pass me- which he does. 100 ft in front of us are two cops (hidden from view) who promptly pull us over and begin to hassle us. For what? Apparently its illegal to pull over and have someone pass you?

Well I was a nice guy- knowing very well what I may have gotten myself into. They were leaving me alone and hassling my buddy in the truck, then asked for license/reg./proof of insurance. I told him I dind't have the reg./insurance on me. No problem, he just looked at the license. After hassling my buddy again (again- not sure what for), he started walking back to his cruiser to run my info. I called to him and told him there was a little problem; not insured or registered.

I was searched, the bike was searched (didn't have anything questionable on me/us). I was able to make the mood better and less tense, we actually started joking around a bit.

Needless to say, at the end of the night I have a ticket for being uninsured, ficticious plates (off my triumph- another dumb move) anb the impound yard has one more ****ty motorcycle in its collection.

Stupid stupid stupid.

I don't want to be a fool and fight it- wrong is wrong- but when I think about it the fines aren't going to be easy to swallow.

Ugggh... what a bad night. At least I didn't end up with 4 more tickets or in jail as he said could have happened.

sorry to hear that.

but, you do have insurance right? not sure about new york but in texas, all you need is liability. that should cover anything you ride i believe. also, can you not get the bike out of the pound and go get it registered? the judge would probably make you pay a small fee or dismiss the ticket altogether if you did that?

Not to upset you further, but our illustrious Governor Corzine recently doubled the fines for failure to produce proof of registration or insurance. This will most likely be expensive.
Best of luck.

Hire a good lawyer. The amount you spend on the lawyer will usually be miniscule compared to the pain in the pocketbook you'll endure after fines, court costs, and increased insurance rates...

dang Travis, sorry to hear mate! Did they tell you what the fine will be? That shouldn't be any points on your insurance though, right? Here in NC, any non moving violation doesn't add any points to insurance, which is a good thang!

THAT IS THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR LIVING IN A FACIST STATE-IN FACT MOST OF THE NORTHEAST IS WACKO WHEN IT COMES TO PUNISHMENT AMD FINES FOR DOING NO CRIME. MOVE TO A FREE STATE.

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN GO TO JAIL IN BOSTON FOR HAVING A BULLET!!! NO GUN JUST A BULLET! I WOULD NOT LIVE THERE FOR ALL THE TEA IN ----?????CHINA.
I HOPE THAT COP GETS LAID SOMETIME BECAUSE HE IS WRAPPED TOO TIGHT.
