Hello,
I plan on purchasing a 2001 Speed Triple from a member of the forum. The only problem with the bike is that it has a broken clutch cable. I don't know much about motorcycle repair so I was wondering if anyone could give me a figure on how much it was cost a service station to fix it, or if I could do the job by myself. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

UPDATE: Went today to a dealer to have a clutch cable put on, and have it checked out. Bike was completely fine, it was perfect. So for $3800 and $116 for part and install, I got a 2001 Speed Triple with flawless silver paintjob, clip-on bars, end mirrors, and daytona decals with only 8100 miles on it. Sometimes good deals aren't too good to be true. Sorry for gloating, I'm just really excited. Already put 3 mi on it and don't have it registered yet...

monSTAR, clutch cable on a 2001 model should be simple. Not sure how much a cable will be over there, here in Aus, they're about $70.

Fitting is easy, so long as you check how the old one comes out, replace the new one the same way. Then adjust it according to the owner's manual.

If you're not up to it, a dealer shouldn't charge you very much to do it.

Mick

Clutch cables are inexpensive and one of the easiest things to replace on a speed triple. I think brakes are actually harder and more time intensive to do than a clutch cable.

Should be fairly straightforward. Just pay attention to routing and follow the adjustment instructions in your manual.

Had the clutch cable go on my BMW once. Actually happened a couple of blocks from a bicycle shop. Took the Swiss Army knife (the one with the handy pliers), took off the broken cable, got a plain ol' cable from the bicycle shop and was back on the road.

Thanks for the advice guys. If it's not covered under the recall, I'll definitely fix that myself. I'm pretty good at working on cars, so I'm sure I'll be able to do it.

New cable from the dealership should cost ~$35.

Yeah. You don't wanna risk a six speed bike having only five, or even worse, no gears.

Not for nuthin', but I emailed the owner of that bike inquiring as to being interested in purchasing and asked about him replacing the clutch cable. He said if it is covered under recall, he would get it fixed.

I walked away.

If it was my bike, I ***** sure would have spent $30 on a clutch cable and taken 5 minutes to put it in to make it rideable.

To each his own :???:
