Hi guys, I know this has been discussed a bunch of times (I did a search) but I never seem to know if the original posters, or the others having problems ever got it sorted out.
Heres my problem. 06 Speedy, doesn't like to start. It turns over fine, but takes 4 to 5 presses of the starter button on average to start . Sometimes it fires right up first try, other times its like a ten minute ordeal. (usually when there is a crowd around the bike..like someone mentioned, must be stage fright)
Anyway, I was hoping it was the gas tank valve, as mine was blocked. I actually just ripped it off hoping my problems would be solved.
Nope today it didn't want to start.
I checked everything. Battery terminals nice a tight, batterys not weak or anything. Gas tank vent valve is gone. Clutch in, wait till the fuel pump has a chance to build pressure. Kickstand up.
I even tried it in gear with clutch pulled in, and in neutral with the clutch pulled in. Doesn't make any differance.
I have the offroad map on my bike (I have some wolf slipons)
I know there is probably a newer version of the offroad map out there now. Do you think this would help?
I know some of you went back to the stock map, but I am not sure thats a good thing to do with slipons.
Looking for some advice. Anyone bring your bike in and get it fixed? What did they do? I would rather just fix the bike myself if I know what look for.....than letting the dealer try and charge me for nothing, and leaving me without my bike.
Just looking for a bit of advice.
Thanks
-Jay

Interesting. I have the same problem. I also have the Wolfe's (not that I'm suggesting relation) but no map. However, my issues started after I removed the gas tank completely myself, had it painted, and put it back together. I have thought it might be related to my efforts but I was so bloody careful with everything I'm not positive how. I have not had time to look into it as much as I'd like to but hope to this weekend, especially since I was 200+ miles from home this weekend when it happened and I actually thought this time I might be stuck.
My bike was at the dealer last week for two service bulletins (unrelated) but I mentioned the issue and they didn't seem to notice anything generally wrong, though I did not ask for a thorough check on this.
I'd be curious to hear more. Your issue sounds identical. Sometimes I give it gas and it SEEMS to help, do you have a similar issue?

Hi Jay,
Assuming your bike's fairly new, I'd say stop tearing stuff out and give it some, well ok, quite a bit of time. Mine used to drive me nuts, but it almost never does it anymore and I have around 3K on the clock. I did absolutely nothing to cure it.
If I recall correctly, others with the problem also experienced similar results, and none of their efforts to isolate the problem seemed to work.
Be sure to keep your battery in good shape, and I doubt that it'll leave you stranded. I think it just likes to convince you otherwise. Sorry couldn't provide the technical answer you're looking for, perhaps someone else will...

ME TOO!
At least 15 to 20 rev's to start!
I turn it over, no throddle until it stumbles, then again and it usually starts under protest.
I have tried a couple of different starting techniques, with a little twist of the grip and without... No difference
When I go to bike meets, I try to leave while it is still warm so people don't think it
has issues... But, It has issues.
The dealer is really trying to help but is at a loss...
Triumph sent me a second review form to fill out, I made it quite clear about my feelings on the mushy brakes and unacceptable starting issues.
As far as the brakes, I velcro strap the brake lever after every ride to keep a firm feel.
I have had TOR's installed and 2 different maps.
My next thing is to try some irridium plugs, I have them, But not installed yet.
I don't expect the plugs to fix the issue, I can only hope.
I constantly check the tank vent valve, No tank vaccum problems.
I love this bike... But an Agusta brutalle is calling me if I cannot resolve this issue.
As it stands now, If I were to come to buy this bike and it started the way it does now... I'd walk away no matter how cool it looks.

Just a shot in the dark but if the throttle cable is adjusted improperly it might give the tps a bad signal.

My throddle cable was sloppy until 2 weeks ago, adjusted the slack out, no starting diffrence. I have 5500 miles on the bike and the starting problem has always been there
in some form, it is getting worse.

Well here's my take. The bike was always a slow starter.
However since I fitted the Zard and Wayne's tuneboy map, the thing seems to start much much faster than before. Barely a jab sometimes and the thing starts idling. Now this could be due to the fact that we are in the middle of summer.
Whatever, as I said starts (and runs) much better now.

Well, I am glad to see I am not the only one having this problem.
I use mobil gas..always premium.
I also tried adjusting the throttle slack. There was no slack when I bought it (used) but I added a little bit of slack. It didn't make any differance though as far as starting goes.
When my bike cranks and cranks...to me it seems overly rich. (I can smell it) Like my plugs are almost fouled. When it does finally catch, it stumbles for a bit.
I'll have to check the plugs.
I do love this bike to death. Its hard to convince others of how awesome of a bike she is though, when see wont start.
Once shes running its great.
Maybe I do need a tuneboy and a Zard! If I knew of any dyno places that are familiar with the tuneboy I would buy one in a heart beat.
Its been really hot this past week. (95 with high humidity)
Thanks for the help guys. I am determined to figure this out.

Avi8or,
Where did you download your map from? I wanna try that one.
Mine is getting worse. HOT starts are fine, warm starts are terrible, say you stop for lunch, forget it its embarrasing. Cold starts are pretty miserable too.
Thanks,
Chris
