More ? about noisy Sprint 900 Engine

Hello folks, I'm new here and new to Triumphs after years of riding Japanese bikes.
My question is this: Is it normal for an idling Sprint 900 that runs wonderfully otherwise to sound like a VW Rabbit diesel at idle? The bike is a 98 and has under 5,000 miles on the engine. THANKS!
