This is the first bike I've had with floating rotors. How much free play is normal (side to side)? I'm getting about 1/8th of an inch. The brakes work fine, but they make a clicking sound now when I get on them. My roommates Suzuki has floating rotors as well, and I can hardly move them. The "problem" is worse when they're hot. I got back from a rather spirited ride today, and could move them the same distance, but much easier. When I wiggle the rotors, the clips (or whatever you call the round things that hold your rotor) click and visibly roll.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's a Triumph, and that makes it normal. Nothing to worry about, it's a known issue and won't hurt.
Almost all my bikes had full floaters, never had to put up with this clicking ****e. But then, none of them was this much fun either.

If they don't move then they really don't float. The intent is to let the rotor align to caliper rather than make the pads wear weird. That is not to say that they won't wear odd but floaters should help.

Lom defines it as an "issue"... it's not an issue. It's the way they are supposed to be... No worries. :hammer:

No, you're right, not an "issue". Meant to say "it's a known sound, nothing to worry about". I forgot you really hate the word issue

True, they're made to float the rotors, except not rotationally, only sideways to align with calipers like Madhouse said. Perhaps I misunerstood Alaska, mine have rotational play and that's what makes the sound.

Thanks guys. Just checking to make sure my bike wasn't a freak. It's not like I have tons of S3's to compare with. You rule.

Discs are constructed that way to permit them to expand (when heated) without distortion. Race bikes (whose brakes get real hot) usually have VERY rattly discs.

Duh, that makes perfect sense. Thanks Aviator.
Instead I should be wondering why the floaters on my earlier rides were so snug...
