So, I'm puttin' together a small PA system for the band. My living room looks like a bomb went off in a recording studio, and I need a break. I think "Hey, I still got some paint left over.... hmmm..."

So with pics o' Limey's ride in the back o' my head, I proceeded to pull the exhaust shields and prime and paint 'em (workin' on the PA between coats - this is the advantage to Adult Onset ADD).

I dunno why Triumph didn't just make 'em this way in the first place. The blacker the better.

Next up, those ugly-a$$ radiator shrouds.

What kind of paint is that & what did you do to prep? Looks good.

Not that I don't like the look, or the effort, but 10 bucks says the paint peels in 17 days or less.

Yup, we'll see whether it lasts - just plain ol' rattle can black. I thought about going with the high temp paint but this was sittin' around.

Not much prep - light sanding, primed, painted. I screwed up the first one and got some orange peel on it, so I stripped it and started again, which was also sorta a revelation on accounta it cleaned up nicely. Since the things are brushed aluminum anyway, even if the paint don't hold, I can always strip 'em and have it back to stock, though I do like the look enough that if this doesn't work, I'll have 'em powdercoated.

Seventeen days, eh? Let the countdown begin :-D

My money is on the paint exiting rather soon too. Fast oxidizing aluminium will take some serious prep work to get paint to stay and to further complicate the matters the guards are in a constant cool-hot-cool cycle.

As the muffler & radiator guards are aluminium that anodises rather well an easier and cheaper option might have been just to get them dipped in the anodizing bath. Or order the factory anodised ones from Triumph catalog.

I'd opt for getting the originals anodised as you will have to take the left hand engine mount to the anodizers soon anyway.

Looks cool R100, can't see it lasting though. Mine are being painted to match the flag theme on the bike, but the custom shop sent them to a place that paints helecopters for the etch primer and heat coating 1st. Good luck, and keep us posted !!

Yup. I'm aware of the potential pitfalls, but it was free and like I said - I do strange things when I get bored (idle hands and all). Anodizing is out, on accounta I want a glossy finish and there's a local bicycle builder who will powder coat stuff fairly cheap if I decide I like it.

I figured there's only about a 25% chance that it will withstand the heat alone, not to mention the expansion and contraction. At the first sign of peeling, I'll strip it off, no harm, no foul. But if it holds, I'll look like a bloody genius :-D

For my next experiment I plan to graft the head of a chihuahua to the body of Sarah Jessica Parker. Of course, some folks say it can't be done, but...
