After following the suggestions of the mysterious English fellow who called me at the store the day after I posted my concern regarding the mushy S3 brakes, I installed the front brake piston kit of an '06 Daytona 675 into my '06 Speed Triple. Following three very hard ridden canyon days and eight hours of a Track Day on the Streets of Willow, I am happy to report...

-- that the problem of the mushy brakes is solved. In fact, the brakes respond far far better than I had imagined. Even after completely bleeding my brakes and greasing up the original pistons, the brakes never responded as well as they do now.

So, to the mysterious caller, whom I suspect may have been my "Deep Throat" inside Triumph itself, I thank you very much.

John, funny you should mention this. My Triumph dealer just replaced my entire front brake system, sent to them by Triumph (obviously). My mechanic and I both agreed that this wasn't going to work. After one day of riding not so hard in the canyons, they are worse than before.
Next day I called my dealer and informed them of this. The very next day, they called me and said the mechanic wanted to try this very thing. They have a totalled 675, and are going to put the MC on my bike. Thanks for the info, I will pass it on to my mechanic, and it has put my mind at rest with this fix being offered.

Alright John, sounds great! But how do I get my dealer here in NC to do that for me? Is this gonna be a worldwide thing that Triumph is doing? I know you are a dealer, and just wondering what I have to do to get my dealer to realize this. They're really hard to convince sometimes!!! :hammer:

Wasn't there an other post stating that the 675 is experiencing the same mushy brake syndrom? If so is it luck that this worked?

I was just in my dealership last weekend. They had five new Daytona 675's and I checked the brakes on all of them. My S3 brakes were freshly pumped and feeling good.

Every one of the five Daytona 675's was considerably worse than my Speed Triple after pushing in the brake pads. In other words, like my S3 will be in about two weeks.

So much for that theory.

John, we have heard of several solutions including pushing the pistons back, removal and cleaning and greasing of pistons, new seal kits etc, and they all work miraculously.....for about 3 weeks, then the mushiness returns.

Come back and give us another report on a month or so of regular use. If they are still working fine then I might cautiously accept that you have a real solution. I am hoping that you are right and that this fixes the problem.......but I am a cynical bastard......we will see...

I'm with Legman on the cautious approach towards claiming the front brake prob solved, so please report back once you have some more miles on the new pistons.

Does anyone know the ballpark price of a 675 piston+seals set?

Also, what was the difference between the pistons? Does the 675 have teflon/nitride coated more slippery pistons or was it something else?

I don't know guys, don't ya think it would've shown it's face at the track??? Seems like the prob would have returned there if it was going to. I may be wrong though. I guess I'm just wishful think'n, huh?

I know that for those of you with mushy brakes you don't want to hear this and I certainly don't doubt that there is an issue with the bakes on the S3; however, I've ridden my new baby steadily for about two months now (~2000km) and my brakes are as tight and responsive as they were the day I drove her home. No change at all and I haven't touched them once. I've said it before and I'll say it again - easily as good or better than the Brembo's on my old Monster. I share your disappointment in Triumph - it seems to be a common problem and yet they remain quiet. It's not like we're talking about a cosmetic problem here...this appears to be a serious safety issue!!!!

For me, the pazzo's go on this weekend (for looks and I'm a two-finger lever guy so the shorty's are a better fit) so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't end up with the same problem you all experience after the install.

Wheeler, I had the problem before my Pazzo's, as did most of us with the problems. But it would appear that not everyone is experiencing the ongoing brake saga.
