Hey all,

I have an extended weekend coming up due to the holiday and I figured I'd go see the folks back in the 'Burgh. Great part is that not only will taking the Triple be more fun, but it'll also save me a significant amount of dough in gas.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions as to a route. I'd like something more interesting than the interstate but still need to make decent time so the Blue Ridge Parkway and its 35 mph speed limit and endless caravans of RVs is kinda out.

I think the BRP speed limit is 45 mph so you could probably get away with 50 - 55 mph. I've consistantly done 60 - 80 mph on the BRP but I'm lucky I didn't get a ticket.

The last two times I rode the BRP, I had no problem with traffic. Usually there's no one on the road.

This is all mostly in the Va portions of the BRP. I don't know how the NC portions would be.

Yeah, 45 might be right, but I do remember plenty of RVs. Funny thing is that a buddy and me actually got clocked doing "70" on BRP. Actual speed was more like 80. When we pulled over, the officer thanked us for stopping. "Most bikers just run" she said. And then she starts telling us that she knew we "couldn't possibly be doing 70, so I ran a self test on the gun and it's malfunctioning. I just figured I'd finish pulling you over to let you know why I turned the lights on." I don't know whether she was just letting us off the hook or if the gun was really busted. In any case I sure as hell wasn't going to tell her that it was reading slow.

Careful on the BRP, my understanding is that speeding there is a Federal offense. Not pretty.

I don't have a alternate route but you could take numerous side trips along the way. Hwy 21 from Jonesville, NC to Wytheville, VA would be pretty good. It would run off of and back to I-77.

You would also be close enough to hop over the BRP and hit the super fun Hwy 8- Hwy 89-Squirrel Spur loop. It would run from Mount Airy up to the twisties and back around to I-77.

Let me know and I can give you directions.

true Golf, he's bound to have fun on Squirrel Spur and Tuggles Gap! There really are some great roads you can hit on the way. I don't know of a good route for you to take all the way, but like Golf said, I can give ya some nice pointers to take off route a little while! :-D

Thanks guys. This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. A good hour or so long sidetrip every once and a while to break up the Interstate monotony without making it into a three day trip each way.

By the way, I became painfully aware of the federal nature of the BRP when I read "National Park Police" on the side of that car that pulled us over. That's why I was trying to avoid long stretches on it this time. Even though I lucked out, I still learned the lesson.
