I am not really familiar with the S3 yet. It might be metal to metal contact in the engine, but your cna find out right away by draining the oil and seeing if there are metal flakes (though generally if it is this the noise will either be very loud or inaudible). It could be an exhaust leak. And it could be nuthin'.

I noticed the same thing, a ticking I could hear with my helmet on. I asked my dealer about this when I took it in for its first service and he told me it was the air-pump check valve and was normal. Friggin' emissions!

Triumph engines are noisy engines. Unless it becomes excessive don't worry about it.

Certain people (no names!) have compared the Triumph Triple to a pinball machine during multi-ball play, or a sewing machine with a bearing loose. Those certain people have also been accused of having a bearing loose.

For further trials and tribulations on the notorious triple, read this:

Maddening Noise Issue

Sure it's a T300 bike, but the principal is the same. Note: the noise is still there.

yes, I also have it and was going to get it checked out this week.
It is starting to sound like a model T. (06 with 4,000 mi)
the 2nd air injection on the motor should not effect the HP right?
On the boilers I work on they do the same thing to reduce
flue gas temp which will lower thermal nox.(smog)
the air on the boiler is also injected be four combustion.

Really doubt it is injectors, particularly on the Datona. The SAGEM injectors on the Daytona are about the quietest injectors made. Not sure about the Keihins (sp?) on the 1050 but I doubt they would be audible over the other engine noise. I would check valve clearance if it was my bike.

Just about every Triumph I've ever heard is noisy when compared to the sewing-machine-silence of something like a Honda. I wouldn't worry about it. My 06 S3 is somewhat noisy depending on what rpm/load situation the engine is in. Still, it's waaaaayyyy quieter than my buddy's 2002 Sprint ST with the 955 engine.

Better late than never...

I know this post is reeeeeally old, but I figured it could help someone else if I posted my fix. At idle I was experiencing the same "ticking" noise others have complained of, took my 2010 Thrux to the dealer and they said they had seen it before and had fixed it by reseting the ecu when it was cold... unfortunately it didn't fix my ticking noise. After a full day in the shop the fix turned out to be stupidly easy: turn the idle down. When at idle the AI system pumps air into the exhaust to control emissions; once any throttle is applied the AI valve "clicks" shut. I had just been "lucky" enough to have my idle (when the engine was completely warm) at about 1.1 - 1.2k; exactly the speed the engine thinks you're giving it gas. As the idle bumped above and below the magic number that annoying click was the AI valve slapping shut again and again. Once the idle was brought down the few hundred RPMs the click dissapeared and we could replicate it easily by bringing the idle back up. There ya are :)
