So I was reading the post about shifting, and saw the link that showed how to do clutchless shift. I was trying out this morning on my way to work and liked it. My question is how does this affect the bike? Will it cause any extra wear and tear over using the clutch?

I shift without the clutch every now and then on longer rides when I'm lazy.

The only ill effect I can think of (assuming your not clunking and grinding gears while shifting) it a little more stress on the lever itself.

Other than that I'm not aware of any. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Clutchless UP shifting is fine if done correctly. Clutchless DOWN shifting, however, will likely wreck your your gearbox!

Has anyone reversed the shift pattern on their Triples? On the new one it looks like you just need a longer linkage rod which would enable you to turn the piece connecting the rod to the transmission output shaft upside down. Has anyone done this and is it that easy?

Dobieman, that's real interesting. I've never had much success with shifting DOWN clutchless, I was taught, admittedly back in the 1960's, that down changing was a bad thing, (for the gearbox). Maybe my gear shifting is not, erm.... subtle enough!

i would not swear to it, but i pulled this off the other day and put it back on incorrectly, i think i had it set up to race-shifting, so it should be that simple if you decide to try it...

other than for 1st and 2nd i generally do clutchless up shifting and occasionally down shifting- it's hasn't affected my gearbox yet w/45,000 miles. It's generally a good idea to tap the clutch along with the throttle 'blip' on downshifting, although if you blip the throttle quickly on the downshift w/o the clutch you won't kill your gearbox.
