hello all,

i have a 2002 speed triple, 16k mostly troublefree miles. i have a new chain/sprockets sitting ready to be changed. i have the factory technical manual (do most of my own maintenance), but the instructions seem to be for a total breakdown of the rear end. does anyone have any references online or care to share the process for replacing the chain and sprockets?

thanks,

barrie

Assuming your bike is a single side swingarm model:

Put bike on sidestand or paddock stand
remove chainguard & front sprocket cover
bend front sprocket locktab(s) away from the nut so that the nut can be loosened & loosen sprocket nut a bit
split & remove old chain (riveting tool preferred, anglegrinding a pin off a link will work also as the chain is going to thrash anyway)
undo front nut & remove sprocket+locktab
remove six bolts holding rear sprocket on (do not touch the big nut on the center of the cush drive)
remove sprocket
mount a _new_ locktab+front sprocket, tighten to hand tightness + do not bend the locktabs yet
mount new rear sprocket+tighten bolts to spec in starlike steps like you would a wheel of a car
mount new chain
mount new locklink on chain paying attention to O-rings and keeping the factory grease on the link pins
rivet new locklink evenly on the chain with a chain riveting tool (does not hurt to have an extra link to practice with on the old chain, if you have not done this before as the link should not be riveted too tight so it will crush the O-rings and bind nor too loose so the link will fly off while on the road)
tighten front sprocket to spec + bend locktabs (gently tapping with a hammer or such) as they were on the one on you removed
adjust chain tightness to spec.

Job jobbed.

Edit. Adjusted info a bit, it might be a bit healthier for the gearbox if the front sprocket is tightened to spec after the new chain is on and loosened while the old chain is still on.

Outstanding write-up Martin. Does this forum have a "How-To" section with pictures? If not it really should they can be so helpful.

BTW: Does anyone know the specs on tightening the nuts? And the size of sockets one would need to do this job?

Thanks

The rear sprocket bolts are 30Nm and the front sprocket nut is 132Nm (this is why I adjusted the above steps so that the chain is still on while loosening & tightening, so that the chain will take some of the torque). These are from the 1050 manual, but I don't see why they would differ for the 955.

Don't remember the socket sizes.
