I just got my 2005 Speed 3 and want to install frame sliders.
I really do not want to fork out $180 for 4 sldiers. So I was thinking of using bmx stunt pegs. They're metal, and will probably stop sliding long before the nylon ones. Some are really cool looking. Does this sound lame??

Well one has to consider that nylon offers rather more friction that metal. If your bike is sliding along nicely, the last thing you want it to do is to continue sliding.

It seems to me that if you can buy motorcycle frame sliders/bobbins for less (through ebay or whatever), regardless of their intended application, and then find bolts and steel spacers at you local hardware store that will fit through the sliders and the engine mount holes, this will be pretty much the same thing as the kit I received from R&G Racing. I think they're perhaps charging premium for consolidating the right size parts that can be found locally with a bit of searching. You save maybe 40-50%. Someone correct me if they know otherwise.

You mean "less" friction.'' I think the idea with nylon is it gives a nice big impact area that doesn't grab and absorbs the forces better. Steel won't absorb any energy and will transfer all the force to your frame, increasing the chance of something bending or breaking. It will more likely penetrate/grab the pavement also.

Aluminium would be a little better than steel.

the nylon does not grab as much and flip the bike as metal would, also less sparks incase of spilt fuel

There's no way to predict the incident that puts your sliders on the ground.. Speed, the surface, etc... Getting something designed for your bike increases the chance that the engineering done on it will help your bike, but it's still not a guarantee. Getting something generic off of e-bay or such might increase your chances of having less protection or doing more damage...

Hi!

I don't have any suggestions except that it's a small expense compared to the damage that can be done if you don't have it. Trust me from experience, don't spare any expense on sliders.
