I tried to use the search function on the forum and could not come out with anything solid. So I have to post the question…. The bike I just bought only has 5000miles it is in excellent condition except the chain. The chain is rusted on the links and I would like to replace it, as well as the sprockets.

My question is:

On sprockets and gearing
I noticed the bike has an 18 front sprocket and a 42 rear sprocket, is this stock?.. if so is there a gearing combination which has been proven to be optimal in performance for the Speed Triples? I know some manufactures gear down the bikes for a variety of reasons, wondering if this is the case with the Triumph.

Also what do you guys recommend as far as sprocket manufactures, should I stick with steel?

Chain question:

As stated earlier the chain has some nasty rust… so I would like to get a new DID ZVM chain… has anyone use this chain before?....any good places to get these parts for a good price?

I went 1 tooth down in the front to a 17 tooth JT steel sprocket. Left the rear the stock 42. Takes off like a mad man! LOVE it! Stock was just a little to tall in gearing for my taste!

Probably depends on the intended use. 17/42 seems to be popular for the street. I went to 17/44 for track use. That gives me 15.5 mph/1000rpm with my back tire, about all the top end I need.
Heist - Anybody ever checked the accuracy of the 1050 tachometer?

17/42 might just work for me.... I do plan on taking her to the track... from time to time.. but mostly on the street...

does anyone have a good company who makes them... I have been looking around and Triple parts are not easy to find..

The latest Cycle World has a sidebar on tachometer accuracy in their 600 comparison. IIRC, the 675 was a consistent 7% optimistic. Most of the bikes were high, at least near red line. Seems wierd, I know they could be spot on. What is the advantage of lying to the customer? Fewer warrenty claims?

Anyone know how many links there are in a standard chain? I have just ordered a gold one ! and a 44t rear sprocket and am a little concerned that 106 won't be enough...

So why are you guys going with the 44 rear? I thought 17/42 was the combo most commonly used.. What will the 44 rear do?

Also... who are you guys going to order the sprockets through.. Wondering if any bargains could be had.

well my dilema is I had always gone down 1 tooth in the front which causes the stiff chain to actually compress tight around a smaller cirumference on the countersprocket I noticed that it makes for a noisey and buzzy chain whine so if u go up 2 in the rear it pretty much has the same effect if u go down 1 on the countersprocket without the chain noise.
