Hi all,

A quick question if I may.

Last friday I took my nice shiney Speed triple in for it's 500 mile service. When I got home with it, I parked it in front of the garage and went inside to clamber out of my leathers as it was really hot and sticky. When I came back out to put the bike away I noticed a small pool of oil have come from a breather tube under the engine.

I assumed the dealer may have overfilled the sumped so checked that and it was fine.

I started her up and let her run for a few minutes and nothing, when I turned her off again a small deposit of fresh oil had come from the breather! I called the dealer who said to return it to them to investigate.

On my way back to the dealer I stopped for fuel but no oil from the breather, I got to the dealers, parked up and again no sign of any oil. The dealer had a good look around but found nothing, we put it down to some form of airlock and carried on.

Last night on returning from a ride again it blew oil from the breather! I'm going to call the dealer who will say bring it back but the law of sod dictates that it won't blow any oil so I've routed the breather into a catch bottle but thought I'd ask the collective if anyone else had a similar problem?

Apart from this, it is a cracking bike

cheers

Are you 100% sure it is oil and not coolant that is spewing from the breathertube?

The 1050s are notorious for puking all coolant above the min fill level.

Hi Martin,

Now you mention it I'm not sure, it looks opaquely clear (if that makes sense) where I'd expect coolant to be coloured by the antifreeze additive (usually green or blue in the UK) and has a viscous feel to it.

It has been incredibly hot when it's done it and the fan does run a lot of the time, if it's coolant then I'll be less worried and go and check the level as my previous bike (Honda X11) also ran with the fan on in town a lot and used to blow cooland mist over the collector on the exhaust which dried it a powdery white but never affected the bike whatsoever

Cheers you've brightened my day. (Providing it is coolant, just off out ot the garage to check ;-)

Should be easy to check by following the culprit tube up and seeing where it is coming from.

Or top up the coolant reservoir under the saddle to the max mark, that will make the bike puke for sure and if the fluid is coming from the tube you were looking at before you will know it is the coolant. Which is perfectly normal for these bikes and considered a feature rather than a fault.

I had little dribbles of oil on my garage floor a few times after coming back from riding. This happened after an oil change. I assume that I was just seeing excess oil being purged out (I knew that I opted to be generous rather than stingy when re-filling the crankcase). Never saw it again after 2 times that I noticed.

Mine is doing same thing . havent been able to pin point exactly what is causing it, with the storm over Fl, but I am going to drain the crankcase and see if there is any metalics in drain pan if there are I know it is eating it self up internally. I hope it isnt . I changed the oil about 500 miles ago but it is hard to check level by the sight glass and I only have a rear stand I will keep you posted.

Hi all,

I've now convinced myself this is coolant as the times it's done have been swelteringly hot with a lot of action from the cooling fan.

The discharge (ooh err matron!) although has a viscous consistancy does not look like oil so I've settled for the less stressful assumption that it's coolant.

However I'll (and I'd like others to do the same so we can get a consensus - good word for a Wednesday evening) do the filling of the expansion tank to max and see what happens test as recommended by Martin just for peace of mind then I can do the National rally followed by four days at the Nurburgring in the quiet knowledge that a bit of coolent venting is good for the soul.

A bit like us blokes venting Stella after a good night out!!!!!

If it will ease your mind any, I filled Speedy to the max shortly after getting her home. She promptly spit out everything above the min mark. I never added any more and she stopped spitting.
