The S-3 will work fine as a track bike and as a bonus you won't have to fix/replace a bunch of bodywork when you crash. The problem is, when you decide to upgrade the bike you'll be spending more money on parts as S-3 performance parts are not as common as those for the "Big 4". There are plenty of 600s out there for sale, all ready for the track with lightweight body work, rearsets, sprocket kits, etc, for really low prices. A lot of these have salvage or no titles and have been traded among track junkies for a good portion of their lives (and therefore have a limited market for resale) but if you plan to do a lot of track events it could be the best way to go.
