Knowingly, I took my S3 for a 1,000 mile run this weekend with a worn rear tire. The Dunlop 208 had about 5k on it and the wear indicators were barely starting to come though when I departed. I rode pretty hard all weekend, and completely expected the tire to be dead upon return.

Which is was.

I'm curious about one thing though. The center of the tread in one section of the tire"wore through the rubber" and down to a different layer (or some other layer). Why did this happen only at one arc on the tire and not around the entire circumference? I'll post some pictures later on.

Was it a balancing problem?

Getting new rubber this week once I decide on the type...

Not bad Travis!

5K on a rear is pretty good, I got 4,100 on my Pilot Power. The wear on the center occurs because that is were most of the friction, heat and wear is happening since you ride on the center the most. If you were on a track you would see a lot more wear on the edges instead.

Tires are not totally uniform under the tread. There is always some overlap areas or each layer of construction. These get staggered around the circumference. So what you saw is normal.

Dr_Gallop-

Thats the answer I was looking for. I wasn't aware of the non-uniform nature under the treads.

TonUp-

I promise the edges are worn more then they look! Its just when compared to the center wear it looks like all I do is ride in a straight line!

I usally pull mine off when they get to the wear bars and put them on my "stunt" bike (the gsxr). I wish I could get 5,000 miles out of a tire. Right now I need to change mine again and it only has 2,500 miles on it
