I took my first ride on a 05 Triple the other day and I'm seriously considering getting one. the bike is simply a hoot to ride, but in the 30 minute test ride my ass was getting pretty sore. I don't know if it's just a poorly designed seat or I'm just spoiled by the huge seat on my FJR. I am a bigger guy at 6'2" tall and 250 pounds. Any other bigger guys riding a triple? If so, what are your impressions of the seat. Right now this is the only thing keeping me from trading in my FJR and coming home with a Triple.
Also, do you think $8999 for a new 05 Triple is a good price. the dealer has a bike that they used for a demo before they got their official demo bike, so it has 100 miles on it. that kind of makes me nervous since I doubt it had any break in. what do you think?

p.s. If anyone wants a mint 05 FJR, let me know!

there is a thread on this page about seat upgrades, first of a few aftermarket seats now available. plenty of big guys ride the S3. why are you thinking of trading the fjr? well I know I would but why are you :-D
price wise, make some calls to other dealers, see what the OTD price is, compare, it is subject to area, availability etc. if the price they quoted was OTD not bad. as far as mileage, I bought mine with approx 1K, didn't know how it was treated, but its fine and there is a 2yr warranty. hope I helped a little, you will not regret buying an S3

Hey Bikeman,

I'm 6'3" and 250lbs. I am finding the Speed Triple very comfortable. I've done several 500 mile days, and I think it is the most comfortable bike I've had. I remember that my initial impression was similar to yours, but the seat seems to have moulded to my not so bony arse. I would not let this stop you from buying a great bike. I've done 13,500 km (8000 + miles) and the bike is getting better with age. I've heard from others who have found the same.

Legman is more your size, but I'm 6'0" and 230, and I can make it about an hour before I have to get off and stretch.

I'm 6'1 and 240.. One of the reasons I got the S3 was because of the fit!! Seating position is awesome to a point where I get backaches now when I ride the Wing for extended hours!!!
The seat sux and I don't have an answer short of getting off and stretching every hour or so.. I have the Triumph gel seat and I'm sure it's better, but it's still pretty bad.. Waiting to see a Corbin in person so I can try it...
Wouldn't worry much about break-in on the Demo bike, $8999 is not bad but I'd see if they'll throw in some trinket (perhaps a flyscreen or service coupons)...

Check out Chattanooga dealer Southern Powersports. They are selling brand new 06 for $8883. I know they are not in your area but you might be able to use them for leverage. My local dealer has an 04 with zero miles for $7000 just for comparison. I think you can get them to sweeten the pot since it is a demo.

wow, that is a good deal down there. I'll print that out for sure as leverage, if needed. Found another dealer with a black demo. Black is THE color I prefer. someone's coming to look at my FJR tomorrow, so maybe I can move on this sooner than I think. I hope so.

bikeman, my stats are similar to yours. I found the seat does take a slight amount of getting used to, but now I can spend hours in the saddle. Even more, now that I've got the gel seat and have broken it in, too.

I'll be surprised if a dealer in Pennsylvania will let himself be influenced by the ad of a lowball retailer in Chattanooga. Use caution if you try that approach. Insulting his intelligence could have the opposite of the desired effect.

diego,
You're probably right about using an out of state dealer as leverage. It most likely won't work. I've got friends that are buying bikes in alabama and riding them home because it's still cheaper (a lot cheaper) than buying from the local dealer. Pity the local dealers don't deal. We'll see what kind of price they give me when I crunch the numbers with him.

i am 215 pounds. i thought the seat was a pain for the
first 100 miles. For the second hundred it seemed OK.
From then on i don't even think about the seat as it is no
longer a "pain". This may be the first bike in 20 years where
I don't feel the need to buy an aftermarket seat.
( get BLACK)
