Just got back from a 1000 mile touring holiday on my Speed Triple. Me, wife and our luggage from North East England (Harrogate) up to North West Scotland (Isle of Skye). No motorways/freeways, just stuck to twisty roads all the way. I'm sure it would have been more comfortable on a proper tourer, but it wouldn't have been half as much fun on the car-free twisties of the Highlands. So get out there and shame all those BMW bikers with barn door fairings and CD players.

Trust me, on a ride that's really long, it's nice to have a tourer too. The triple is more fun, but a Wing is great for those distances when you're an old fart like me.

Besides, it's not always the bike that beats another, it's the rider.

Hey, speakin' as a BMW rider, I resemble that remark! My fairing ain't no barn door an' I wouldn't be able to hear a CD player over the wind noise. But the seat's comfy and it scoots pretty good for a 22-year-old.

But yeah - let's see some pics. I'm dyin' to know how you fit luggage and a passenger on that thing.

On the Beemerschnitzel, it's easy.

How was your wife on the back of that thing? Did she find it a rack or was it comfy?

Steve

hey desmo, my wife says it wouldn't be bad at all if it wasn't for the rear pegs being so high.

I'll post some pics tomorrow. Sorry R100, not all BMW riders are softies with the latest touring machines.
Luggage consisted of a Triumph tank bag and Ventura pack on the back. After a few adjustments to the suspension it handled pretty well.

I agree that the S3 makes a fine touring bike if you travel light and your idea of touring includes lots of time on back roads and very little time on freeways. Fortunately, that describes the way I tour!

Touring on freeways sucks. On my trip to Canada last year, I think only about 80 miles or so of the 3600 miles was on freeways.

The only time I like slabbing it is if I can go at a speed greater than 90 mph. I was on a Freeway in NY last year where the cars in the fast lane were all doing 85-90 mph. I stayed in the fast lane doing about 95 mph for a good 10 miles or so. That was fun. The police have since let me know I should stop doing that.
