Alrighty guys, I've got a little over 6400 miles on her now after my trip last weekend. I've been thinking of taking her in for the 6k mile service, but according to my owner's manual, there's not much they do. If it's basically a oil change and check everything else, I'll take care of that myself. I just changed the oil at 4200 miles, and I'm planning on changing it about every 3500, so I can stand to wait a little longer on that. So anyway, opinions, did any of you take yours in for the 6k service, or do it yourself? Is there anything important they do at this service that I'm not aware of? Wazzup? Thanks in advance. :-D

6k is like you said an oil change and a quick once over. I have always changed my own oil and done minor maintenance. The 12k is the important one. That's were you valve clearances get checked. My suggestion is if the bike is acting normal and everything feels ok save you money for the 12k service.

Cheap, I'm with ya, 6500...

There are two things... one is the FI error code check (whatever) but the other is the throttle body balance... The other issue is what about warranty stuff? I'm thinking of taking mine to a local guy to get the throttle bodies checked out... What is the consensus?

Odd philosophy, you will spend the cash changing the oil every 50 miles, but not to have someone else do it kit:

I take mine in every time. Whenever I rely entirely on myself, something gets missed. Plus I can say, it's always been dealer serviced when I trade her back in on my 2008.

sorry, I don't trust Triumph's 6k mile interval recommendation on oil changes. I don't feel every 3500 miles is excessive on oil changes. But yeah, you're right, I won't pay someone else to do it when they end up claiming that they checked this and checked that, and a simple oil change ends up costing $200! :hammer: I'm just curious if there's anything of importance that I can't check. Which thanks to Geof3, I now know that the throttle bodies need to be balanced. Keep 'em coming.

Dwarf, you are absolutley correct with regard to the service thing. There IS NO doubt that a properly maintained with proper records bike will be worth more at resale... My biggest issue is getting it to the dealer, 85 miles away...

Just had my 6k service w/o the oil change...cost ~ $140...Very reputable dealership, so now I have the peace of mind...I guess. Though, I had to loosen the chain when I got home. Hindsight...I would not do it again.

My first service cost me $255 last weekend. I'll always pay the rip-off fees on a first service, but then will do my own after that - with a little help from my mechanic friend. I'll likely take it to the dealer for the valve check at 12K, but until then I'll do things myself, knowing they'll get done and not cost an arm and a leg.

In the US, by law, if you can demonstrate that required service was performed (by providing receipts for parts, etc), Triumph cannot deny a warranty claim. Even if you don't perform the required service, Triumph can't deny a warranty claim unless it can demonstrate that the failure was caused by lack of maintenance.

I just looked again at the scheduled maintenance at the 6,000 mile service. I'd do it myself as I have more confidence in my own work than in a shop mechanic's.

Incidentally, have you guys noticed that the famous and important first (600 mile) service does not entail checking the torque on any fasteners?! The closest thing is "Fasteners - inspect visually for security." If one has the mechanical skills to change the oil, one has the mechanical skills to perform the first service oneself. Save your $250!
